He was a regional talent. I remember a round of Gatti just beating the dog stuff out of him and he went back to the corner and the translator said his corner was telling him he was boxing beautifully and won the round easily or something like that. I think I was watching live and I'd laughed out loud at the time. Like, yes, if you're trying to die, you're performing almost perfectly. My brain may have exaggerated this memory... but anyway...
I just went and watched a highlight reel of that fight on YouTube. It was actually a great fight. Those guys never stopped throwing punches.
Where did you get GOD from? In Denmark he was Løvehjerte = Lionheart. Entertaining fighter. Lots of guts and bore in attack. Saw him several times live, and I have all his fights on tape.
Solid European level fighter. His best win is probably Alessandro Duran, where I thought He won clearly despite the split score. Other than that, there was a lot of record padding at home and You could see He was out of his depth when He fought Gatti, who probably was never world class as a Welterweight himself.
Altough The Ring had him in the top 10 at the time.He was the european champion I believe. He wasnt really THAT out of his depth with Arturo,he was losing close but clear prett ymuch every round but he was in there. He had a different style, more warrior like than a Gianluca Branco.
It's been a while since I saw it, maybe it was more competitive than I remember it indeed. I think that top 10 rating was a bit of a stretch - probably down to his shiny record, although perhaps the Welterweight division was just not that strong at the time.
In truth the rating was inflated. But european champions usually creep in at the end of the top 10.He as no 8. 2 weeks earlier champ Zab loses title to Baldomir who soon loses it to Floyd. Zab had gotten it from Spinks who had it from Mayorga who had it from Forrest who had it from Mosley. The title changed hands very quickly in that era.
From january 2002 to january 2007 you have 5 years. During this timeframe we had 7 ww champs.Less than a year reign. Those dudes couldnt keep the belt to save their life.
I liked his quote to a journalist after the Gatti fight. Journalist:Thomas I thought he was done Damgaard:So did I
