While none of us knows enough of the relevant details about the context to know whether Lockridge *had* to knock that man out (he might have been an actual threat or he might have just been a cheeky clown), it definitely didn't look like a cheap shot to me.

I used to play in bars in a r&r band back in the day. ..saw at least a dozen fights. Every single fight ended with the first punch, first kick, broken bottle, or smashed chair. None of the "wild west " battles you see in cowboy movies.

Get the first punch in no matter what.

I don't care about the law, so if you cheap shot someone and know he's not ready for the shot in your head you have beat the guy fair and square? Don't think so. I've seen it happen plenty of times, one guy has hit someone unprepared and knocked someone out yet has got his ass kicked when the other guy comes for revenge. Look i get anything goes out on the street but don't pretend that you're King Kong because you knocked someone out with a free shot.

Well i can safely say from what i recall I've never cracked someome first while they're not ready for it, i put someone in hospital for 8 week and thought I'd killed the kid after hitting someone with an elbow after he punched me for no good reason. I'd dread to think what I'd have done to him given a free shot.

If you get in my face, be firmly assured I'm going to punch you. No intelligent person thinks there is any moral obligation to wait for an attack to actually occur before obviating it. If you give someone good reason to think you may be about to attack him, the benefit of the doubt most definitely is not yours and any hesitation or reluctance on his part is strictly supererogatory -and quite likely foolish.

Even the non "duty to retreat" states don't allow you to punch a man peremptorily because he has invaded your space though. But I agree completely re: there being no moral obligation to wait for a potentially dangerous adversary to square up and assume a fighting position before striking.

I've never needed to be first and not done bad so far. Some people aren't confident in their own abilities so i can fully understand that they want to get every advantage possible.

There is a scene in an old Charlton Heston western , "Will Penny" where a fella provokes Penny [Heston] into a scrap Penny hits him over the head with a cast iron skillet, the injured party protests," that wasn't fair " Penny replies,"you're the one that's down."
Fair and square? That died out when I was in my teens .I was about 17 and got cocky with a bloke in his 20's he was a squaddie in the Inniskillins, now I believe disbanded. The upshot was we went outside and he proceeded to beat the **** out of me, I had boxed and so had he, plus he was stronger and better ,he had me down a few times, I ended up on my hands and knees disorientated ,going round in circles, but every time he dropped me ,he stepped back and waited till I got up,till I couldn't get up any more.
Today in my town ,and I'm sure in most ,I would have had my ribs and head kicked in as soon as I hit the floor and probably by more than one willing chap.
Age does compensate in some ways, as you lose your athleticism and ability to defend yourself you develop more acute radar and can usually sense grief coming, then, before he is rudely brought face to face with the evidence of his own physical decline , the sensible old man makes his exit.
If he is fortunate like me to have 3 huge lads who look on the prospect of a row as a starving tiger looks at a joint of raw beef,he is usually left in peace.

I guess I'm different to the norm, cheap shotting happens all the time and everywhere. Like i said it's easy to look a million dollars knocking someone out when they're not ready for it, i guess doing it in a fair fight is asking too much for most. Thankfully those days of getting into trouble are behind me and i sleep easy at night knowing I've not done bad over the years with the circumstances.

I'm much too old for that game now,my only fear is being taken advantage of by some younger fitter guy, because I know I wouldn't be able to leave it there ,and my life is too sweet to waste it on some knob.

Gents: let me tell you a story. I was in the band, playing in the Club 69, an African-American bar in downtown Yonkers, NY. The bartender was a huge guy, looked like Ernie Shavers. He was the bouncer as well and broke up fights or threw guys out all the time. No one would mess with him.
One night, a particularly well dress big man shows up and goes right up to the bar and orders drinks. Everyone realized without a word being spoken that this was a situation where someone had to prove he was the better man.
The well dress guy and the bartender had words, space was cleared around them in anticipation of the battle. Finally, the bartender picks up a bar stool and smashes the well dressed guy over the head. The dresser's only response was to continue sipping his whiskey. The bartender jumped over the bar, ran out the door, and was never seen again.

True story. If I'm lying, I'm dyin'.
