Could Hearns have beat McCallum in 1983-'85 ? And how does he do against the prime light-middleweight Mugabi around the same time ?

It's possible that Hearns would have out-boxed McCallum back during this period considering McCallum was still ambling towards his peak, but consider that both The Hitman and The Body Snatcher were VERY well acquainted with each other...and that possibly anything could happen.

As for Mugabi, his power and strength aside, I believe he walks into something HUGE very early and is stopped by Hearns.

Loses to McCallum on points, KO's Mugabi late, before he starts tiring.

Hearns would take Mugabi apart (so would Hagler, had he fought him much earlier, but Hagler was in sharp decline at that point).

McCallum is a more interesting proposition.

Hearns decisons McCallum in a close fight, stops Mugabi in mid-to-late rounds.

Yes Hearns and Mcallum were gym mates in the early days of their careers. Hearns actually gave Mcallum his nickname and later took it away and gave to G-Man, who he said hit harder to the body. I would think it would be interesting fight with Mcallum standing a very good chance.

Didn't McCallum get the better of sparring sessions with Hearns? Not that that translates to a win in the pros

McCallum was yet to hit his full stride during this time, and as such I believe he'd have likely been out-pointed by Hearns. Mugabi might stand a better chance of landing the money maker on Hearns than some seem to feel. You'd have to favor Hearns, though.

Dont see anyone at 154 outpointing Hearns tbh & Mike didnt have the 1 punch to score a KO.

People always compare the post Hagler Hearns when comparing him fighting McCallum since that is when McCallum was getting his fame, but the pre-Hagler Hearns was fast and would outbox Mike over 12 or 15 rounds. The post-Hagler -Hearns would struggle and it would be a matter of him winning in rounds or landing the right, but the pre-Hagler-Thomas Hearns was fast and sharp and outboxed Benitez and devastated Duran. He beats McCallum no matter what, and Mugabi would be stopped by Hearns in about 2 or 3..

I heard it was equal, but Hearns was a champ for years and Mike was just another sparring partner. Hearns to Mike was the big guy who Mike wanted to bust up. I don't think sparring matters. Hearns of 1982-1984 outpoints any 154 version of McCallum

In 1983, John Mugabi was in fine form & repeatedly called out Thomas Heanrns to face him at 154lbs! Hearns didn't want the fight!

Hearns is much the better boxer, has better skills than Mugabi, but contrary to popular opinion, I believe Hearns would have been starched in two rounds! His chin was nowhere as good as Mugabi's!

I'm not sure about McCallum, think the longer the fight went the more chance Mike would have. He would no doubt target the body. Hearns would be an overwhelming favourite by the bookies in this one, but McCallum would have a good chance at cleaning them out!

I think Mugabi might well have beaten Hearns back then too.

Mugabi was the number 1 contender for Hearns WBC 154 pound title, but Hearns paid Mugabi twice to step aside (fighting Fred Hutchings, then Hagler), then chose to fight James Shuler, allowing Mugabi to move up and face Hagler.

That doesn't prove that Hearns was afraid of Mugabi, but they weren't too keen on fighting him.

Mugabi was a lot better in those years than people seem to think. He really was ruined by Hagler.
