If compare with Wilder he had 2 hands. Very good and effective jab that might hurt as from hell + ofc leading hand very good. I ofc subjective but I think skill wise he was far better jabber than prime Pulev even if in ideal shape. Ofc boxers size is different.
Expose? Hearns won the first round and hurt Hagler then hurt his right hand, Tommy did get "exposed" a lot more at 160 than the lower weights though.
I won’t say Hagler exposed him. I think to beat Tommy you needed to be a beast and literally walk through fire. Few could do it and those who did like Marvelous Marvin, Sugar Ray Leonard and Iran Barkley paid a heavy price.
I pretty much agree. I was a Tommy Hearns fan as kid, but Hagler is one of my all time favourite fighters - so really it was a bit of cheeky banter more than anything. The fact Hearns fought as a junior middleweight and ended up a cruiserweight is crazy to me. I wonder if we will see Canelo fight at cruiserweight in the future? When you think about it like that it puts it into perspective.
It was 2 of the greatest fighters ever in one of the greatest battles ever..... something had to give....
Everything you said about Steward in your list was correct but Hearns didn`t fight on the balls of his feet, you can`t get any power in your shots while being on the balls of your feet.
He could do when he wanted to like in the first Leonard fight from round 8 onwards he was dancing, moving on the balls of his feet as they roles switched and Leonard became the flat footed, stalking puncher while Hearns became the agile, constantly moving boxer. But you're right he usually set his feet to generate power on his shots.
I must confess I loved both Marvelous Marvin and Tommy Hearns. Canelo at Cruiserweight I think is to much. Even though he stopped Kovalev at Light Heavyweight I actually don’t think he looked that good at the weight.
Balance Mark. Manny Steward stressed balance and he had his guys move around slightly on the balls of there feet. I didnt say they punched off the balls of there feet. Like I told u a dozen times befor do your research!! Look up the Kronk style!!
More like a right hand like Wilder and boxing skills could outbox Ray Leonard. (Which Leonard said after their second match).
Hearns is a true boxer/puncher. Equally he could knock your block off with one punch but just as easy get on his bike and flick the jab building up points but being elusive as well. Durability and a liking to brawl just a bit too much where his weak points. Hearns is considered one of the hardest punching welterweights and even 160 lb fighters of all time. He was aggressive and a fan friendly type of fighter we was a huge name in boxing and famous around the world. Listening to his newer interviews, Hearns really wanted to entertain and put on a show, he was rarely in a boring fight, he would elect to trade at times when boxing was probably a better option. Hearns had a piercing quick like jab - it was a weapon just on its own. His offense was dynamite and varied; his 1-2 (like vs Shuler) is textbook and not many could handle his straight right, he also liked to finish with the left rip to the body. He was a superb natural finisher and if someone showed they were hurt, he would get them out there. He was a freak at 147 being 6'1. Floyd Mayweather says he is TBE but at 147 Hearns would have smashed him to bits. Hearns used his height perfectly would often lean back and use a long jab to maintain distance shooting over the top of the opponents jab or shoot a straight right just over his shorter opponents left shoulder right on the chin. 2 of Hearns losses were against boxing royalty- SRL and Hagler who are considered in the top tier of all time and he had his moments in all those fights. Iran Barkley just had Hearns number, but is often underrated, he had one of the top chins ever, Barkley could take a beating with the best of them. Vs Hearns Barkley had that confidence that if Hearns would trade with him he could catch him. Most other fighter didn't have that chin to even test the waters, Barkley did.
