I wouldnt have Hearns H2H no1 at welter and its debatable whether he is no1 at 154, you can most certainly debate he is but you could argue others aswell. IMO though under the right circumstances I think he could just about beat anyone from 147-154 in history given his immense ability. I think say if he fought guys like Robinson or Leonard (almost consensus H2H 1 and 2 at welter) over a 10 rounder in his prime..Id give him a huge chance of being able to keep the fight at his terms over the shorter distance. Napoles? The power, speed, size and skill of Hearns vs Jose's skin..as good a chance as anyone to force a stoppage there. I think his track record in his prime warrants him to be top 5 H2H at welter or there abouts..Of course possibly there are guys below him that could beat him under the right conditions but I think there are also guys above him that Tommy could knock off if the circumstances favour him.
Hearns was an all time great puncher at 147 as well as a fine boxer. I say fine and not great because it's very possible that he would not been as effective if he was average height and reach for his division. He was also not very strong physically despite his power. However, i feel that hearns, with his advantages and tremendous heart, is a nightmare for the majority of the all time welters, even beating the elite in the division (except robinson).
Yes, but Hearns used his height and reach to his advantage, his whole style was based around it. Of course he would've been far worse without these advantages, but so would Hagler if he had a weak chin, or Pipino Cuevas if he couldn't punch.
He was a tall middleweight not a big one. At lightheavyweight when he fought Virgil Hill he looked smaller than Hill but still outboxed him.
I don't think so. I think what hurts Tommy is the fact that he was relatively inexperienced when he fought Leonard. Had Tommy been able to stay at the weight and keep fighting and fought like he did against the great Wilfred Benitez at 147, I think he might have been near unbeatable.. He learned a lot in the Leonard fight.
