theres no such thing as having a great chin when fighting a 147 pound version of hearns, as tough as margarito is. :yep

if margarito could stretch him into the latter rounds, you never know. marg is stronger than leonard ever was and managed to ko him after being outboxed

But leonard was plenty strong and a harder, far sharper hitter than margarito.

Not to mention far superior in nearly every aspect

Strength and punching power are two different things

Sounds very much like something I posted a year or two back - I think it was also quoted in an old issue of KO Magazine. Manny Steward stated that Tommy was only at 60% capacity stamina-wise for many of his fights. That's Manny talking though so take it with a pinch of salt.

He had constant problems with the right hand too; broke it in 2 of his biggest fights against Hagler and Benitez for example. As for Margirito the guy does have a solid chin and it could go the distance with Tommy winning a wide UD or equally it go 6-8 rounds with Margirito on the end of a beating. It could even go early in 2 rounds.

That was the real beauty of Tommy - you often had no idea how long the fight would last. One thing for sure though, he wins.

Roldan had a measure of success in the 3rd and 4th rounds when he hurt Hearns but looking at the fight as a whole he did quite poorly IMO. He was floored by the very first right hand that Tommy landed and the final right hand put him down for the full 10 count. I think it's a bad comparision fight to use if you're making a case for Margirito to win. In any case, I don't see the 147 version of Tommy being sucked into a brawl like that; he got more power happy as his career went on.

    Good post Pea.

I like Tony a lot. He is very high on my list of current favorites, just as he was before he fought Cotto. Margo is tall, but he DOES NOT have long arms. He'd have to get inside to get anything done. Tommy did have long arms, and he could move backwards extremely well. He'd hammer Tony with right hand bombs at will, and finish him in 3 to 4 rounds.

That's the key. Hearns arms were long as hell, and his punching while moving backward was brilliant.

Have you seen the fight? Because I don't think the size advantage played a part in Williams winning at all. His superior workrate for the first half of the fight is what gave him such a big lead. Williams did not use his size to his advantage and rarely does, for that matter. Mainly because he doesn't have a strong jab.

    :-(

There is no reason to suggest that Margarito would be KOed by anyone. It's a baseless prediction.

If anyone is going to have to be scraped off the canvas, it will be Hearns.

Hearns has a better chin than Cotto.

I have to disagree with you on that one...

    If anything, they're equal.

I'd have Cotto's a couple of notches above Hearns'. Cotto's chin was only really weak at 140lbs and since he stopped drying himself out and moved up, his punch resistant has improved considerably.
