Would the "Hit Man" dispose of Jackson early similar to the way Mike McCallum did in the second round? Or would Jackson do a demolition job on Hearns ala what he did to Terry Norris and Herol Graham?
I think Hearns would stop him pretty early. Jackson wasn't difficult to find; the problem was that he was so big and powerful that he could just fire back over the top of whatever you try and get him with. With two big punchers both with dubious chins, I think the first to land the big punch takes it. Hearns, having the greater speed, range and accuracy, would do so. Also consider Jackson's susceptibility to the right hand, and what Hearns' best punch was.
Hearns would have to be favourite to either stop Jackson or box his way to a decision but he would have to be careful. No moments of madness.
i'd favour hearns because he could box if he wanted to.having said that i think 4 rounds is the maximum it would go.
I picked Hearns but i think Jackson had the better chin, Check out the fight with Thomas Tate, Jackson showed a pretty good chin in that fight against a good puncher. Great fight i saw that live on the undercard of Chavez/Mitchell.
Going to have to disagree on this one. He got buzzed time and time and time again, and the shots didn't look seem that heavy to me tbh. Maybe Tate has more power than I'm giving him credit for, but he seemed like he was more playing a more boxing-moving slickster role than trying to punch JJ out of there. It was an awfully close fight as well, not reassuring to anyone looking to prop up Jackson's chances against a mover. Still like him though.
Yessir. I like that quick and nasty left hook of Hearns to land early to the breadbasket and set up the right hand for the finisher. Hearns threw a sizzling left hook to the body and I just don't see the Jackson defense preventing it. I don't like the Jackson defense against a tall sharpshooter like Hearns very much either. But Tommy does pose after throwing.Probably a 3 round fight at the most and less than that if both guys are winging in there.
surely hearns was even a cleaner fighter than mccallum , i do not remember hearns clinching. i think jackson would have stopped hearns after being outboxed for a number of rounds (before the 12th round final bell). probably closer to hagler's achievement than to leonard's achievement.
