Would Roberto Duran ever have been competitive with Hearns at welterweight, or was he just having a bad night? Hearns reach: 78 Durans reach: 67 Hearns size: 6'1 Duran size: 5'7 Obviously a lot more comes into play when fighting a boxing match, but Duran was at a huge disadvantage against Hearns.
But did Tyson ever face anyone as comparatively good as Hearns though? I don't think Duran would have been able to pull this out regardless.
The Duran of Montreal would've done better than he did that night in 1984, but as far as beating Hearns, that's another story.
No Mas, or more appropriately, "No quiero pelear con el payaso" was no doubt disgraceful (he quit on his feet, not his stool), as were some of his lazy performances after training on food and beer and women, but he's still an ATG no doubt. One of the greatest, if not THE greatest, lightweight of all-time. Probably the best fighter of the 70s. 4 division champion, and an amazing talent in there.
I agree Duran was a great fighter but is overrated here at ESB. He quit against SRL and was 1-3 against SRL, Hearns and Hagler. But most here seem to forget or don't want to bring it up.
He was an blotted midget for a lot of his career. He did amazing well travelling through the weight classes. World Champion from Lightweight to Middleweight. Thats mental.
The fact that he holds a win over any of SRL, Hearns or Hagler is a testament to a great fighter, considering he was a blow-up lightweight past his prime.
One extremely impressive thing about Roberto Duran is how many guys either are long time champs in one division, or go through the weights and win titles in multiple weight classes. Usually guys are one or the other. Thomas Hearns won titles all over the place but never reigned long in one weight class. Floyd Mayweather's longest title reign in 1 weight class was 3 years. Oscar De La Hoya's longest title reign was about 2 and a half years. Ray Leonard's title reign at welter, stacked as it was, was about 2 and a half years. Marvin Hagler reigned as middleweight champ for 7 years. Bernard Hopkins for a decade. Roberto Duran was a long-time lightweight champ for 6 years, and he also won titles all over the scale.
Try ruling the lightweight division for nearly a decade, then by the only man to defeat SRL in his prime for the welterweight title. Next you go on to destroy Davey Moore for his Junior Middleweight title (Davey was never the same after this beating) Immediately following triumph you will get destroyed by Hearns, knowing damn well you will lose but taking your beating like a man because every one thinks your a puss. The reality is Duran never said "no mas" in Leanord 2, what he said was "I don't want to fight with this clown anymore" he felt fighters should fight not showboat. Still you walk into a destruction to prove your worth. Everyone writes you off again, so you fight Hagler and become one of only two men to make him **** blood (the other being Mugabi). At 37 everyone thinks your done for sure and you come back and starch Barkely. Keep in mind both Hagler and Barkley destroyed Hearns. That is why he considered #5 ATG by most experts and historians.
