Throw out the proverbial lucky punch and Roy Jones at his best beats any fighter in the history of the sport at 60 or 68. Bold statement? Maybe so, but I believe it, especially a stalker or boxer puncher. Just too much speed.
Roy had something like 24 fights at MW and he was grossly over-protected for most of them. Picking him over a head to head monster with 80 fights and a dozen defences, someone in the mold of Monzon, seems like craziness and naivity to me, never mind bold.
2 of the hardest men to beat stylewise in their primes, I think Jones being the naturally bigger (in bulk) man might take this. Either man had the power to get the other outta there but since these mythical fights are assumed to be their primes unless stated otherwise & Roy never lost in his prime at 160 & Tommy did lose (twice by KO), I`ll go for Roy Jones in this one. Very fascinating fight tho, would love to see it happen. :good
Monzon was quite a slow fighter that liked to come on late using his size & accuracy, Jones is a bit bigger than Carlos & I think Jones would be a nightmare stylewise for Monzon anyway. Carlos IMO would be too far behind by the time the championship rds came that he would need a KO & he aint KOing Jones, he aint got the one punch power of a Robinson & he aint hitting Roy nowhere near enough times clean to score an accumulation stoppage. Jones UD Monzon (clear UD, 8-4)
i dont think jones would win early both were very skilled boxers and i think both would respect each others punching power early on so i would go with jones stopping hearns around the 8th to 10th rounds
Protected? He fought for his first title in his 22 or 23 fight, against Hopkins, and basically moved up after one defense. What else could you ask for from a prospect coming up the ranks? He then completely shut out Toney for the super middle title. Who else could he have faced at 160 at that time? James Toney was by far the biggest fight for him at that time?
Tommy showed time and again he could outbox any boxer, even later on his career (Hill). Jones would never have the balls to go in bombing against Tommy, thus Hearns keeps him on the end of that left, and threatens with a right if Jones gets a bit lively. Hearns WU12/15 (7-5/9-6)
I reckon Hearns may shock people by taking him out of there if Roy tried to take him out. Roy would have to box him well for the fiest half og=f the fight and wait for him to tire out.... I SEE roy stopping him late, only if he is very catious early on though.
It would have been a fascinating match-up stylistically. And it would depend on which version of Roy showed up. But I like Roy by decision or late KO in this one.
