I'm not sure that Irish Steve hits hard enough that I'd expect him to put Hearns in trouble. Collins' chance of winning is about the same as Hearns' chance of scoring a KO. Possible, but not likely. Hearns wins clearly, but the fight is surprisingly competitive.
I think Steve competes in that he keeps a lot of rounds relatively close, but Hearn’s jab is the decider here and he piles up points and walks away with a comfortable decision. Not that he runs away with the majority of the rounds, but that jab and the eye-catching rights he gets through outweigh Steve’s more plodding, slogging style … I’ll go 11-4 Hearns over 15 and 10-2 over 12. Collins’ best chance is if it’s set for 15 and he’s still got some gusto in the final three or four rounds where maybe, just maybe, he can turn up the heat and have Thomas in enough trouble to at least have a chance to get him out of there, but I don’t see it happening.
Never thought about this one before. Good match !! I chose Hearns by decision on the poll. Steve Collins was extremely tough and durable so I can see him going the distance. An upset win for Collin’s isn’t out of the question either but Tommy should definitely be the favorite. Exciting fight.
What a dumb match up. First of all Hearne jab is going to tear Collins face up. Then when Collins ventures inside that right hand is going to put Collins to sleep. REGGiE JOHNSON who was a fine pro had Collins stumbling around.
Hearns on points clearly for me, speed, jabs and shots thrown from different angles would have made the difference in my opinion
I like Collins here. I'm breaking the east side boxing forum law here not siding with Hearns. Understood. But I like that toughness and conditioning of Collins in this. He does not wilt. I see Hearns wilting in this. I think Tommy's legs fail him the 2nd half of the fight. The 2nd half of the bout see's Hearns looking like he did against Barkley in that rematch and putting his back on the ropes & trying to ride out the storm. I really like the experience Collins got from that McCallum fight to be a large benefit here. Without that experience against a top shelf operator would make for a big big subtraction against a guy like Hearns. 7-5 or 7-4-1 type decision.
You must be joking if you honestly believe Collins would outpoint Hearns. The skill level gap is immense Hearns would pick him apart at range with his jab. And not only that Collins lost to every notable fighter he fought at Middleweight he's 0-2 in Middleweight title fights his best weight was Super Middleweight. There's no logical reasoning to favour Collins at Middleweight vs Hearns go watch Collins get clearly beaten by a past it Kalambay then tell me he beats Hearns.
as a mw, Collins was more of a conventional boxer-mover, which should play into Hearns' hands more. he spent the 1st 2-3rds of the McCallum fight trying to box off the back foot & getting his @$$ beat, before finally switching tactics & going on the attack in the last few rounds. he didn't become a boxer-brawler until he moved up to smw.
