Thomas 'Hitman' Hearns was a dangerous & fascinating fighter who more than lived up to his name. At 6ft1 he was a living nightmare for any welterweight - dismantling his opposition with relative ease. The only one capable of beating was another ATG - Sugar Ray Leonard, who himself was taken to the limit by Hearns & would have surely lost if not for his late comeback rally. Tommy went on to bigger & better things - moving up in weight to became a 5 weight division champion winning his final belt all the way up at LHW (175lbs). In a highly successful career, Tommy had a lot of success - particularly against slick, technical boxers such as Benitez & Hill. However, he struggled against fighters who hit hard & applied lots of pressure such as Leonard, Hagler & Barkley (although Leonard generally fought the slick-boxer style, he had underrated punching-power).
    How does Tommy fare against:
    Robinson
    Lamotta
    Fulmer
    Basilio
    Graziano
    Monzon
    Jackson
    Norris
    Mugabi
    Mccallum
    McClellan
    Benn
    Eubank
    Jones
    Dela Hoya
    Mosley
    Trinidad
    Vargas
    Margarito
    Mayorga
    Forrest
    Cotto
    Canelo
    GGG
    Jacobs
    Lemieux
    Kirkland
    Angulo
    Charlo(s)

Mugabi and Benn would have a lot of trouble getting up once Tommy hits their crude asses.

He beats Basilio, Graziano, Jackson, Norris, Mugabi, McCallum, Benn, Eubank, De La Hoya, Mosley, Trinidad, Vargas, Margarito, Mayorga, Forrest, Cotto, Canelo, Jacobs, Lemieux, Kirkland, Angulo & the Charlo's.

He loses to Robinson, Monzon, McClellan & Jones.

    50/50s: LaMotta, GGG & Fulmer.

Wtf are some of these picks? He damn near kills Margarito and Angulo would literally provide less resistance than Shuler.

Jones and GGG would take Hearns out of there. I'd lean towards Robinson.

I think he was outboxing McClellan at the Kronk and I don't think GMAN has the stamina to take him out but he definitely has the power.

McCallum used to get the better of Hearns at Kronk so that's 50-50

I think he can outbox Monzon.

I think he outboxes Robinson and Robinson would have to come from behind to win.

Trinidad has a shot of a late KO like Leonard got. Same with Eubank and Alvarez.

Benn might well get into range and take him out but it's 50-50

    The rest he beats

Benn would KO Hearns IMO, a 50-50 fight on paper but what I'd envisage is Benn gets hurt and backs off, TH goes in for the kill and gets caught by a left hook or right, beginning of the end.
As great as Hearns was I just can't see any fighter with a fragile chin beating Benn at MW because you will get your chin checked at some point by NB.

People often say that pressure fighters, especially the ones in the higher weight divisions, beat Hearns, but they often forget about that when talking about Benn vs Hearns

Agreed. A lot of middle weights on that list who would have been dangerous propositions for Hearns.

There are several guys on that list that aren't going to beat Hearns other than by some hit by lightning event.

There are several things that are true about Hearns. First, he can blow you out early but he had only a few stoppage wins come late and Medal was due to swelling and Shields on cuts. Second, when Tommy set out to outbox a guy, it rarely went against him, but when he was forced to box, it often did not go well for him. Third, Hearns didn't take body punches well at all; just a few, well placed, took a lot out of him. This really shows up at 147-160 and I'm guessing because making weight was hard on him.

Hearns beating guys like Basilio, Fullmer, and LaMotta, comes down to how he fights them. If he comes out firing he may win early but I don't think that it is likely. Those early exchanges, with those named above going to the body on Hearns, are more likely to damage Tommy and force him to box. But if he comes out with the plan of winning by boxing, his chances are pretty good.

Mike McCallum can box with Hearns, take his punch, and work his body so he could be poison for him. Hearns can certainly outbox him, like he did Virgil Hill, but I wonder about how sound Hearns really was from 47-60. I am reminded of the DeWitt fight; Hearns won clearly but one hook to the body in the 7th took a lot out of him. I am reminded of the Olijidae (spelling?) fight in which a 9th round hook on the chin took Tommy's legs. Those guys were not able to capitalize, maybe McCallum could.

Robinson can take his punch, box with him, and outfight Hearns all day. Hearns doesn't want to fight Monzon and I am not sure that he can outbox him.

You can't let Hearns dictate and decide the terms of the fight. He can box your ears off if you lay back and let him. If you try to avoid his right hand and wait him out, he will go to work and hit you with his best shot like he did Shuler. A lot of these matches come down to who can impose themselves and fight their fight.
