Manuel Méndez vs. Gilberto Espinoza, 8 rounds @ light welterweight

 

Round 1

Méndez is walking Espinoza down, cutting off the ring with a tight, forward-curled posture, shoulders hiked up, chin scrunched down between them. Overhand right scores for Méndez. Espinoza is dancing along the ropes and tossing in pot shot flurries. Espinoza is switching to southpaw and throwing light jabs with either hand on the backfoot. Espinoza keeps peppering the guard with combos. Méndez swirls a left up top, pantomiming a left hook and then looping his arm around Espinoza's flank, trying to pull him close for some infighting but Espinoza escapes. Southpaw again, Espinoza pumps some right jabs while tiptoeing by the ropes. Big right rocketing up from the hip by Méndez, buzzing Espinoza and nearly trapping him in a corner. Espinoza slaps down on the head as Méndez dives in on him going for body shots. Espinoza landing mostly with the inner arm, a few inches past the elbow, not legal blows.

Round 2

Méndez is following, pushing a line drive 1-2 upward, headhunting but getting picked off by the mitts of Espinoza falling like pinball machine paddles in turn. Espinoza is dropping in combos on the outside, remaining orthodox. Méndez backs him nearly into the ropes with a couple of explosive right hands from the rear hip, but can't pin him down or land on the button. Espinoza is ducking high combos and looping rights into the body, then holding.

Round 3

Méndez is rowing out a left jab, still the aggressor but getting his feet tied up as Espinoza keeps leading him around the ring and changing directions constantly. Méndez finally manages to catch Espinoza skating along the ropes, and buzzes him with a right. Espinoza recovers and starts putting uppercuts together while strafing out to ring center, scoring them past Méndez's guard from beneath. Espinoza now lefty again. Méndez whipping hooks at the body coming forward. Méndez forces an exchange and claps a left hook on Espinoza's jaw. Big overhand right by Méndez at the bell.
