Those of us who were too young for prime Tyson should appreciate what Jones is doing.

:deal:thumbsup It's way too early for any comparisons like this. Jones is good. Great? Far from it.

Comparing the impact and dominance of Jon Jones to Tyson's Heavyweight reign? Lol.

    Not Tyson's reign.

Tyson's run to the title and brutal domination of his first title fight.

Jones beat the UFC version of Rua which is a pale imitation of his pride days, 3-3 tells you as much. He would need to do a touch more to be in the same ballpark imo.

People still talking about Ruas cardio etc need to realise he was not gassed in the first minute of the fight which basically saw him grazed with a flying knee, almost hit with a spinning kick and ****ing SLAMMED on his back when trying to land a big right and punsihed from top position. He wasn't doing well then faded, he was dominated in all departments from the get go. And the phrase 'UFC version' when applied to an ex Pride fighter is basically a euphemism for 'clean'

As for the Tyson thing, I don't see it. I personally think Tyson is the most over rated fighter ever as his only top name win was Spinks, every good fighter he faced beat him (and some ****ing awful ones) I see JJ more like a Jack Johnson (not a racial comparison) just a guy that seems to have taken a sport to a new level with a unique technique and ultra athleticism and appears pretty much unbeatable (excluding dives)

Not really. Three knee surgery's would be the deal breaker. You think UFC fighters are clean? The whole org is a who's who list of substance abusers.
Jones has had what 14 fights? Way to early to say anything, such is the way in mma though.

Some of you ****ers need to read for context.

You are putting Tyson's entire championship reign up against Jones' run to the title. :patsch

So you can forget about the hype surrounding Tyson around the Spinks and Holmes fights, it is irrelevant. :-( We are comparing Jones to a 20 year old Tyson who has just KOed Berbick, not one who just destroyed Spinks and unified the titles. :patsch

You don't see any parallel between the youngest ever heavyweight champion, a heavily-hyped and seemingly unstoppable physical freak who dominated and brutalized all his opponents with vicious technically-evolved highlight reel attacks, and the youngest ever UFC champion, a heavily-hyped and seemingly unstoppable physical freak who dominates and brutalizes all his opponents with vicious technically-evolved highlight reel attacks?

Only because Jones wasnt compared to Sugar Ray Robinson, instead of Mike Tyson who clearly is not worthy to be compared to someone with a legacy like jon jones's!

Jones is after all clearly a level above fedor, A. Silva, GSP ect what else could he possibly prove?

Jones might as well retire now as the best to ever live.

    no.

Jones is more unorthodox and uses his athleticism and speed to dominate his opponents.

By the way their have been many fighters who have looked sensational in the beginning of their careers. jones is special but does not have the aura that Tyson had who's first 18 opponent were ko'd he was a technical wonder and a fierce attacker with devastating punching power they are not similar at all.

I'm obviously not saying they are clones of each other at all. Of course there are many differences. The most obvious being that Jones comes across as an extremely controlled, socially well-adjusted young man.

But there are many similarities. As far as the recent light heavyweight champions go, Jones much more than anyone else has the aura that he will kick the living **** out of all comers. People marvel at him, his size relative to the rest of the division, the speed and violence of his attacks.

But even when they are different they are alike because they are on opposite extremes of a scale.

    * Tyson was extremely short for his division. Jones is remarkably tall.

    * Tyson was notoriously brutal towards women, Jones is unusual for his age in his apparent level of commitment to his long-term partner.

    * Tyson was a homeless street kid with no real family whose entire teenage years were dedicated to boxing. Jones came from a stable family with successful siblings and only took up MMA three years before winning the title.

    * Tyson was never prepared for how to deal with the money and fame. Jones seems extremely level-headed considering his age and the amount of success he has had in such a short time.

And so on and so on and so on.

Someone like Rua himself announced himself in a spectacular way. As did Belfort. But those guys never seemed like unstoppable physical freaks whose techniques hurt every opponent too badly to mount any effective offence. Tyson seemed like that. And Jones seems like that.

Wrong. Mike was a furious brawler that could box. He's a killer at heart and instinct is to destroy, not box. Cus trained him to think, but don't mistake who Mike was.
