Those of us who were too young for prime Tyson should appreciate what Jones is doing.

    :patsch Moronic comment.

Pulling off a move which required great speed of thought and of movement, balance, agility, technique and mental dexterity right away was the behaviour of a creative and versatile fighter who knew to strike early to catch his opponent off-guard... which would leave him affected and depleted for the remainder of the fight.

"Animals" go for the jugular irrationally, with no concern for technique or ramifications.

This was the opposite of what Jones did.

I think you don't understand MMA very well. :-(

Wrong. Irrespective of your personal opinion of Tyson's mindset (no doubt arrived at through watching representations of him in movies/documentaries and reading the opinions of others), the facts which can be deduced from watching footage of him fight was that Mike Tyson was a skilled boxer who had a strong grasp of some of the key fundamentals of boxing. "Furious brawlers" don't possess the head movement technique that Mike Tyson did.

You guys need to get out of the mindset that every single boxer who fights offensively or aggressively is therefore an "animal", a "killer", a "savage", etc etc etc. I see it on here all the time. Tyson, like Pacquiao and Duran and countless others, fought with intensity, emotion and a brutal instinct for the finish, but he did so while utilizing sound boxing skills, the evidence is on tape. Watch it.

YOu think wrong then. He faced very solid competition in his prime years. He won the World Heavyweight belt...when it actually meant something back then.

  4. I thought that idea and it has a similar pattern. But thats as far as i would go, you can't be niave enough to compare Boxing heavyweight Ranks of that time to MMA ranks. Boxing is far more dense and rich full of experience, Tysons rise was far more phenomenal.

MMA is still just a baby and yes the MMA divisions and UFC titles are held by hard dangerous fighters but it can't realistically the same credibility as boxing just yet.

    Tyson after 20 months, 28 fights - 28 wins - 26 knockouts - Heavyweight champion-

    Jones after 20 moths, 10 fights - 9 wins - 1 loss - 5 knockouts - 2 submissions - No championship

Jack Johnson more athletic? Hmmm re-watch the grainy footgae...more like far bigger, and better tactics. There were plenty of fighters who had better agilty and speed.

Tyson was NOT extremely short just short....Jones inst extremely big just tall 6'4 isnt a freak for heavy or light-heavy.

Am i being pedantic, yes but i need to be, becuase people are using words which will lead to the over hype of Jones.

As far as Tyson being brutal to women, well son, brother mate you dont know him on a personal level, only throught media....if he was such a brutal beast toward women no woman would ever go with him.....of course he wasnt a saint even by his own admission.

Jones in regard to his personal relationships.....well yet again you dont know, only through the media.......im sure you thought Tiger Woods was so nice, oh wow what a man.

Tyson took up boxing when he was 13 years old around the late part of 1979, and started to train with Cus D'Amato and his team around the summer of 1980, he won the title in November 1986 which equates to 7 and half years from starting to train in the sport to winning the title, boxing a sport that had existed in its state for over 50 years.

Jon Jones as you claim (i dont know) started 3 years before wining the title? Or do you mean 3 years training then became a pro? As he has been a pro 3 years already.

Tyson original family was not stable in the conventional sense but he lived in a 13 bedroom mansion, and had a loving environment and a adopted mother that stood by him until her death.

Tyson was probably the most prepared athlete ever, had sparring partners at 15 who sparred with the heavyweight champ at the time (Larry Holmes)....maybe Tyson was someone who no matter what was always going to come unstuck when he got to the top and Jones wont but its early days yet.

Sorry to derail the thread but, wasn't there some controversy regarding his admittance to the hall of fame because of his lack of solid competition? Just haters?

On the thread subject though, although Jones wrestled in college he only really started training mma three years prior to becoming the champ. Makes it seem like about a third of the training tyson did to become champ but, i don't think that's a fair comparison at all. Boxing is far more refined while mma is still young and the skill pool isn't quite as deep. Let's not forget brock was a champion in this sport

Go back and watch the fight. That version of Buster Douglas could have ran through the entire HW division today.
