Those of us who were too young for prime Tyson should appreciate what Jones is doing.

Both guys do have a fan friendly style. It really comes down to preference and I think in this case it's MMA vs. Boxing. Which sport do you favor over the other? I'd rather see a brutal KO as opposed to a sub. But that's just me. Tyson putting someone out with one of his dynamite uppercuts is more aesthetically pleasing than a rear naked choke or a kimura.

Hmm. I'm not so sure Tyson was more disciplined. Jones appears sloppy only when he's throwing punches. Everything else he does is sharp. He's a young guy who fights like a veteran and that's part of what makes him so dangerous.

Even when Jones was deemed as the Golden Boy, there was always something about him people (most of them anyway) didn't like. He's like the overachieving schoolboy who has an annoying smirk on his face each time the teacher gushes about him. Tyson reached Elvis-like stardom. I'm not saying Bones doesn't deserve to have fans but comparing their star power is like day and night. Even in the midst of his legal trouble(s) people still hung on to Tyson.

So far Jones is the better fighter in my opinion. That I can't argue with. He's beaten a handful of great fighters and could end up surpassing Fedor's legacy before the age of 30. But in terms of excitement and charisma Mike Tyson takes the cake. Easily. Not even close.

If Jones is math and science then Tyson is lunchtime and sports.

I wrote that eighteen months ago.

Since then Jones has destroyed four former champions, stopping three of them and losing maybe one round between them. Only one challenger has left the cage without taking a savage beating.

He has dominated everybody and become a megastar in his sport, as well as beginning to become a crossover celebrity. No MMA star can yet hope to be as globally famous as Tyson, but Jones can't go anywhere there are MMA fans without being instantly recognized.

Maybe you could laugh if Jones had picked up two losses since this thread was made. But he's 4-0 (3) in that time. :-(

Great argument you made though. Tough to argue with seven emoticons all in a row. :good

The first clue there is in the first ten words of the thread title. "Those of us who were too young for prime Tyson."

The second clue came later in the thread, when I mentioned Douglas-Tyson as being the first fight I remember.

Yes and as stated three or four times so far, Jones never had the ability to instantly become that kind of international megastar, because his sport isn't as established. But he's starting to cross over.

Besides, this is more to do with his in-cage achievements, rather than his personality or mainstream hype. Jones climbed the ranks with lightning speed and WIPED OUT all the top men in his division, just like Tyson did. His fights are notorious for their level of violence, as Tyson's were.

Now he's at the point where he has wrecked all the viable challengers, the public are beginning to turn on him as his perfect-pupil act slips, and he's even starting to have high-profile encounters with the law. The cracks are beginning to show.

    Don't think so.

I used to have a few old tapes of Roy, his fights against Vinny Paz, Toney, Sosa, Griffin 2 etc.

The vibe with him was that he was a prodigy putting on a show. He'd rap, clown around, showboat. It was all about RJJ the performer. His athleticism was breathtaking, but you got the sense that it was more about putting on a show than it was about hurting somebody.

Jones, like Tyson, is all about getting in there and brutally kicking somebody's ass. There was no playing to the crowd with either of them. To me Roy was more of an entertainer than a fighter, which is supported by his persona, rapping career etc. Jones on the other hand has a wide streak of mongrel in him. You get the sense that he really enjoys beating somebody's ass in a way that Roy never did.

That's all opinion, but it's opinion derived from watching all 3 guys. :smoke

I just can't appreciate someone like Jones until he fights a young strong challenger in his prime. Who is he fighting next? Dan Henderson? Chael Sonnen? Lyoto Machida again?

I'm suppose to take this seriously?

I think one major difference is size when making the comparison. Tyson was a small dude knocking huge mofo's out. Jones is a huge dude mauling smaller, weaker guys.

Jones should be a legit heavy. He's got a strange body type and obviously has that freak strength, brothers are pro football players, it sort of explains he has huge strength in his genetics. It's like someone took normal muscular development away from his legs so that he could fight at light heavy. He has a lot of room on his frame to bulk and it very well might make a guy like him more explosive. I'd like to see him put on some size in his legs and go heavyweight, really test his wrestling and fighting ability vs. guys his size. Not trying to bash him too much, I've been a fan for a while.. But he's so damned cocky for a dude beating up on smaller men.

when tyson first broke onto the scene he beat everyone, he put fear not only into his opponents but into fans too

could you imagine JBJ being as good as he is if he was doing all the **** tyson got up to after cus died and he left rooney, drinking and clubbing most nights only training for 3 or 4 weeks for some fights

tyson was an enigma who was plagued by being shorter and smaller ina sport where height and reach is a huge advantage, jones is nothing compared to tyson they are galaxies apart, this thread sucks **** but what else would you expect from a numpty like haggis

How many kids ask their friends if they would take a punch from Jones for a million dollars?

People still use that analogy when discussing Tyson.
