Does it make you crazy or mute the sound when a countrys national anthems sung before the fight? Was a time when the Star Spangled Banner sent chills up your spine when a singer belted those impossibly high notes and heldem till glass broke. Now they have a motley collection of artists, or someone the promoter wants ta pop, contorting the anthem till Francis Scott Keys eyes would glaze, because they havent the chops to sing it right. The Philippines stands out as the only country at the moment with the pride to make sure its sung thrillingly. A Diva dressed-to-the-nines does it. Dont know her name or speak the language, but her operatic rendition puts the Philippines front n center and shows respect for their nations rich tradition in the game. The Mexican anthem has those same rousing elements in the music; but its done to lesser affect because of the disparity of talent that sing it. When done right, everyone would wanna be an Aztec warrior. Youd think countries would wanna put their best foot forward in front of the world, not just call up a local in the crowd who knows the words to wing it. With some countries, it's like cringing at a sixth-grader singing at a school assembly. As long as the national anthems are obligatory, wish they were done at their best; it would add that much more fuel to the fire.
man, i get pissed with the people they bring in to sing the anthem. the worse prefight anthem i've heard was recently with the jones/tito fight. they had that gay ass light skinned boy from high school musical sing. i think his name is corbin blue or something liek that. but he sounded like ****. for annother fight, ray jay (brandy's brother) sang and he sounded like absolute **** too. it's pathetic.
perhaps it depends who sings the star spangled banner especially that one time(and this is recent) can't remember what fight but the one who sang the US anthem got out of tone at the last part that even the soldier posing next to her almost laugh.
I can't stand national anthems at boxing fights or anywhere else. They drag on forever and are a ridiculous and outdated idea.
You're right, JO, it is moving (certainly in "Casablanca"), but I haven't heard a rendition at the fights since I saw Laurent Dauthille fight Jake LaMotta.
they really have no place in boxing imo. you are not representing your country when you go out to fight, you are doing it for your own personal gain.
Very true, the national anthems have more of a role at football or rugby games. Because it gets the fans going.
The Filipino national anthem is admittedly the best I've heard. I don't have a ****ing clue what they're saying, but it sounds nice to me. I don't really like listening to people sing the their anthems though. When they're done well they're alright, but the majority of the time the singers just make me cringe with their poor performances.
