Thoughts about the weekly series, Boxing From The Forum, early 1970's. This program was telecast on NBC on Friday nights. That is where I first saw School Boy Bobby Chacon fight, and many other.
Loved it! That series introduced me to so many west coast fighters including my all-time favorite Armando Muniz. I was very fortunate that a fledgling new station in my town aired both Boxing from the Olympic and Boxing from the Forum. Man, twice a week I was seeing a show rather than waiting weeks upon weeks before Wide World of Sports would show anything. And of course, when they did, you had to sit through an eternity of figure skating from Finland or Badminton from Brussels. Great memories thinking of Muniz, Chacon, Danny Lopez, Rodolfo Gonzalez, Hedgemon Lewis, Ruben Navarro and not to forget Ray 'Windmill' White. Good times.
Those were the days, in my hometown following the local news every Friday night at 10 30 pm, I would tune in to watch the guys you just named. I even saw Jerry Quarry fight on one of the cards in 1972. I even saw Jose Mantequilla Napoles defend his World Welterweight Title against Hedgemon Lewis. But I have to admit, Ray Windmill White was sure fun to watch, loved his back hand. Tom Harmon was one of the fight announcers.
That's right. The Forum cards had Tom Harmon and Mickey Davies at the mic and the Olympic telecasts had Jim Healy. Again, good times.
Not sure I ever saw the fights from the Forum. The ones I remember I think were from the Olympic and I loved watching them. They were shown in Seattle on a syndicated basis, delayed a week or a month or two. I remember seeing a lot of Mando Ramos, Indian Red Lopez, Scrapiron Johnson, and Ray Windmill White (in retrospect one of my all-time favorites although I was then pretty serious-minded about my boxing, and I didn't fully appreciate what he was doing!). At the time I was watching, the TV duties were chaired by Dik Engbert with commentary by matchmaker Mickey Davies. The introductions were by the inimitable Jimmy Lennon.
This classmate of mine bet me $ 10.00 on the Ali vs Quarry rematch after watching Quarry fight on Boxing From The Forum. Well it was billed as The Soul Brothers vs The Quarry Brothers. Bob Foster was defensing his title against Mike Quarry, I won me $10.00 easily, Lol.
