Thoughts on Abner Mares?

What do y'all make of this kid? I've been riding this bandwaggon for a couple of years now. Abner has some really quick hands and actually reminds me of shhhhh...dare I say Amir Khan, lol? I love his approach, variety and with his frame he could fight all the way up to 135 but there's no rush on that. He suffered a pretty bad eye injury which hurt his progress and kept him inactive for a while. I like his swagger and hopefully he'll blossom into one of boxings next stars.

I think along with Gamboa and Juanma he's the baddest little dude in boxing. I also think he could be the Tarver to Juanma's Jones. These two know each other like the back of their hands and they got some unfinished business from their 2 or 3 fights in the amateurs; and I believe Mares took 2 out of 3. Will it happen? probabily not for another 12 months with everyone salivating over Gamboa vs Lopez. Look out if this fight is made - Abner can turn those gloves over and compubox loves him LOL!

 

Well if ishypedia says he'll struggle with Yohnny then he might not be what i thought. lol I'm just on prospect watch atm.

There was a bunch of young fighters i used to be high on like Cosme "I'm afraid to move forward and make a fight" Rivera. I watched him in a fight about a year ago where the kid 'ring generaled' and fell asleep towards the end, and got caught with a trash hybrid shot (somewhere in between a flash hook and an okay uppercut). But he had serious skills and was only getting stronger & better. Probabily too small for some of the sharks at welterweight, which i suppose is why they're moving him along at a snail's pace, i.e. let those monsters get older & move to 154.

Then i heard good things about the son of Julian Jackson, I thought it will be interesting to see if Julius can carry some of The Hawk's heavy hands when the head gear comes off but haven't seen him since. even though I haven't seen Julian's younger son, John Jackson, I hear that he may really be the one to look out for at welter. Interesting to see the "Baby Hawks"! How refreshing would it be to have another "hawk" for the future of boxing, wow!! Somewhere out there, Terry Norris Jr. is shitting himself, LOL!

I am "once bitten twice shy" on even attempting to dissect future matchups, as someone might cancel with a sore fingernail. But having said that, What do you all make of Martinez vs Pavlik? I think this is a very dangerous fight for Youngstown's finest. He will be fighting one of the craftiest guys out there. A slickster that is never in the same place twice, and a guy that can use Kelly's blinder jab to his disadvantage by angling him off with turns, overhand lefts and the occassional liver follow up.

No way that basic 1, 2 beats Martinez.

Yeah, the eye injury must've been really serious, hope it hasn't effected him to much because its sink or swim time now.

 

I take back what i said about there not being many prospects, Have you all seen Demetrius Andrade? Okay, later on tonight i'm gonna grab a beer and do some scouting. lol

Saw Andrade from the beginning as he got on alotta FNF's and I remember thinking, the definition of suicide is to actually accept a 4 round fight against this young stud who has nothing to fear in getting gassed. So you are basically fighting a 6'1" destroyer that throws every punch in the book at you and has an Olympian pedigree to boot. Get this kid up to 8 rounds before he kills someone. lol that was about in his 3rd or 4th fight, so whats his progress been like since?
