I like the story of the kid saving his sister and don't even really mind that being the inspiration of the division's name ...and I've long thought a sort of "super cruiser" or "junior heavy" might be a welcome addition should it find a way to elbow into the sport...but this is going to have a hell of a hard time getting off the ground, due to a lot of factors. (the availability of solid inaugural talents who can either come down from HW or up from CW/LHW/SMW; the state of current world affairs with the pandemic and everything having slowed down the business side of boxing in general; backlash against the name; the perception that we already have too many classes and that problem being exacerbated by too many belts within each..)

The WBA must be satisfied with having 25 different ‘world champions’ at every weight class.

I think 200-225 lbs weight class might be good if they will keep cruiser limit 175-200 lbs because otherwise CW division might be done completely if limit will be 190 lbs.

Problem with multiple belts never will be solved: promoters, both: events promoters and boxers promoters loves belts. Managers and agents loves belts, boxing orgs are happy to have huge bunch with belts.
National, regional and continental titles is very easy to understand and they does have legit reason and ground. Like British, Commonwealth, Euro Union, Euro, Asian etc.

These: global, international, intercontinental, internim, transcontinental, franchise, in recess etc looks that are stuff very difficult to understand.

I wish I had two more hands, so I could give this weight class 4 thumbs down.

I was originally going to mention that origin name story, and how (IMO) they exploited a feel-good story to sneak in more BS, but I wound up deciding against it.

No, I got that. The point is that if they want more sanctioning fees, the can just invent another heavyweight champion or two.

It's true, it could have been as nefarious as that - or, it could have been a well-intentioned but clunky attempt to pay the kid tribute. (when maybe the situation would've called more for concocting a special commemorative belt for him or something), guess I was just willing to give benefit of he doubt. I know either way the use of his name was soundly criticized by fans who just thought it was a stupid name for a weight class, even leaving aside issues of sensationalistic opportunism.

The old adage 'less is more' springs to mind when discussing weight divisions in boxing.

I think they could have done what's already been done and moved the CW limit to ~210. Maybe accompany this with moving LHW up to 180 (although this would mess with Canelo so it won't happen).

But it all seems unnecessary. Wilder was a bathroom trip and a haircut away from 210 for some of his title fights against super HWs. It's a pretty select group of giants who can't get below 200.

The only value I see (as a fan) is for it to be a "junior" division where young HWs can develop without so much pressure to bulk up. Perhaps it makes the next generation of HWs fitter and we can have fewer 3 round fights followed by 9 round slow dances. It won't play out like this, but this is the most optimistic fantasy I can muster.

    Good vid again Rums
I never heard that fact about Froch KO'ing Groves in Wembley stadium, though. That was totally new for me, as I believe that's totally new for everyone else here as well
