He cashed in on the Tyson upset.

He came in in woeful shape and went through the motions for a few rounds. He then got knocked down by a decent right hand but not a knockout blow and then chose to stay down and collect his 24 million

Holyfield did what he had to do but this was far from the Douglas that beat Tyson.

I didn't like but loved Evander going into that bout.

He'd already proven his toughness with that first Qawi bout. And he signs the contract for the rematch and goes out and slaughters Qawi. He had shown championship pedigree with all those cruiser weight title defenses. Buster was a one night guy---not a guy doing that his whole career.

I thought Evander was a great underdog and going to be one tough hombre to beat in his heavyweight title opportunity. One guy had shown high pedigree consistently since his days as an amatuer. The other guy was 1 night. And since I did not buy into the Tyson mystique like others did--that single night's great accomplishment compared to a career of accomplishments?

Evander brought a lot of things to the table that were being dismissed and overlooked.

James Buster Douglas was a modern day Rocky Balboa on the night of Feb 11 1990 when he defeated a 49-1 favorite in Mike Tyson in Tokyo, Japan. Tyson did not fear or respect Douglas, did not hardly train if you call nights out with Geishas as training. Douglas took advantage of the opportunity of a lifetime as he had many personal issues burning in his mind. Douglas became champion that night, stopping the undisputed champion. But when he fought challenger Evander Holyfield in Oct 1990, the novelty of being champion had wore off, he did not train, he ballooned in weight, the desire was long gone, he was stopped by a very hungry challenger.

I read somewhere Douglas was genuinely upset by the way King and Tyson smeared his victory and didn't want anything to do with them. However, back then if you were in the boxing business you had to deal with King, because his tentacles were anywhere; thus this would have been one factor for Douglas just quitting the game after cashing a nice paycheck.
