Thoughts on Chris Byrd........

Holyfield had a massive shoulder injury in the Byrd fight.

 

Evander Holyfield had tests yesterday on his left shoulder. He was injured during his International Boxing Federation heavyweight title fight against Chris Byrd. Holyfield's manager, Jim Thomas, said results of the M.R.I. test would probably not be known until today.
The 40-year-old Holyfield said he injured the shoulder in the first round of Saturday's fight in Atlantic City. Byrd won a unanimous decision.
Holyfield used his left hand sparingly against Byrd, and was credited with landing only three jabs.

 

Swinging for the fences against Byrd will do that.

Not the first time someone tore their shoulder early in a fight reaching for Byrd...just saying.

 

Uninspiring and middling, but i like him simply because he stands as proof that size and weight are completely overrated factors in the HW division. Guys like him, Adamek, and Chambers can succeed despite their limited skillset just because they're so much faster and generally better trained in terms of stamina, if they have the beard.

Also he's a nice guy.

 

Cmon man, he injured his shoulder in the first round and landed three jabs. I think Byrd has been on the receiving end of some very favorable scenarios against the best opposition he beat. The rest he lost to. The best fighter he probably beat was Fres Oquendo and that wasnt even convincing. I dont know how you cant see that or even compare his resume to an all time great, when he really never beat anyone realistically?

 

-Why do all these fighters injure their left shoulders fighting Byrd? Is he that lucky of a ******* or does it have something to do with him baiting fighters to load up and making them miss? Its hard to jab or land a left on a southpaw..let alone a very slippery one. I have to adimt I was in your boat not long ago, but the more I think about it..Byrd's style had something to do with those injuries.

-I would put Tua over Oquendo...he did knock him out afterall. McCline as well.

-I compared his resume to an all time great over a specific stretch of time and it curioiusly holds up very well on paper.

 

No but limiting Lewis to lineal title run does him a diservice, his WBC run and none title run was just as strong with Bruno, Rudduck, Golota, Mercer, Akiwande, Mason, Morrison, Briggs.

 

Again, my point was not a career side by side comparision.

 

Holyfield was 3 1/2 years older with all the punnishement fromt the Lewis fights and injured when he faced Byrd. Strange how you don't think Charles was the same fighter in 54 that he was in 56 isn't it Mongoose? What about Moore was he the same fighter in 58 he was in 55?

 

-Injured while fighting Byrd. He was also coming off a win against the aggressive Rahman that was simliar to his Tyson performances. Evander could still handle guys like that, but chasing a fast boxer like Byrd? Bad news. Again, I used to not credit Byrd for the Holyfield and Vitali wins..but I've had a change of heart and come to the conlusion he probably had something to do with those nagging shoulder tears.

-lol So now Lewis ruined Evander? Oh geez.

-Brutal KO losses to two of the hardest punchers ever in Marciano and Holman. Free falling from the rankings. I would say Evander after Byrd, is a fare comparision to 56 Charles.

-Moore didn't start physically slipping until the 1960s and it still took the greatset to send him into retirement.

 

It was the first round. Holyfield injured the same shoulder against Moorer. Coincidence, more than Byrd knowing how to injure guys shoulders by making them miss. :yep

 

First round...10th round, all it takes is one bad miss. Evander should stay the hell away from Southpaws evidently, no wander he didn't want the Byrd fight.

Was the Moorer injury even legit..not sure what to even believe about that fight anymore. I remember at the time, he was claiming his heart..which god healed apparently.

To be fair, I don't think causing "shoulder injuries" is Byrd's ultimate strategy. It isn't exactly something you train, learn, and master. :rofl It just happens that some of the more physically fragile guys he fought have hurt themselves chasing him.

2. I take it you didn't watch Holyfield-Lewis 1 and 2? Holyfield took a sustained beating in both fights and Lewis is a bigger puncher than Marciano/Holman. Holyfield looked far worse in the Ruiz fights than he did against Lewis, nearly every who doesn't have an anti-Lewis agenda agrees with this

Eh **** it,

Its controversial enough. I detract the statement about Holyfield being as good as he was against Lewis on the basis of the SHOUDLER...not the proposed theory that Evander was ruined after following Lewis around the ring for 24 rounds catching jabs.

Everything that happens when the men are in the ring is fair game and Byrd deserves full credit for the win, but I will take that part of my comment back.

I still stand firmly behind my point about the pure resume achievements of Byrd and Lewis. Hey to be fair, Tua was injured and fatter against Lewis than he was against Byrd.

2. Bought the boring ****ers on PPV unforunately, and just plain disagree with all that. We are seriously comparing the worse sustained beatings of a man's career to Evander/Lewis?

3. Not above! About the same. Moore was distracted by a bull**** **** charge but Patterson also had tools Rocky didn't to better exploit the Mongoose...fastest hands in history being one. For the record, I've always ranked it as Patterson's best win.
