Thoughts on fighting when not 100% fit/sharp in the early stages of your career?

I got a phone call to fight on Friday short notice.

Fitness wise I will be able to go the rounds easy, but I'm nowhere near as sharp in terms of timing and reflexes as I would like to be.

If I was a pro and my record was the be all and end all I wouldn't take this fight, but as an amateur at the start of my boxing career I'm thinking take the fight. I still feel confident I can win and if not it's another learning experience.

My medium to long term goals are the Harringey Box Cup in June and next years ABAs. Another fight win or loose should give me more experience, however a lot of people say don't fight unless you are 100% ready.

    Thoughts?

This is amateur boxing. This is how things are generally. Take the fight mate if you are happy with your fitness.

I would say at least 3-4 bouts on every club show are made at even shorter notice due to last minute pull outs. Very few amateurs have the luxury of being fully prepared.

Get the idea of being / feeling fully prepared out of your mind now mate. If you genuinely want to improve you need to get as much experience as possible. If you are reliable and make yourself available at short notice, you will find you will get even more bouts because word soon gets around between coaches / matchmakers and they will have you in mind when matching future bouts.

Why do you believe your timing / reflexes aren't as good as they could be at present?

How many bout have you had?

    Good luck.

I over indulged in the beer at the weekend (didn't expect to be fighting again until May 12) - sparred last night and felt off despite being able to do the rounds quite easily.

I've had 5 so far. Won the first two and lost the last three (2 I felt unjustly, but that's amateur boxing).

I'll a bit of sparring tonight and see how i feel.

Thanks for the response by the way.

P.S. I don't engage in regular drinking sessions between bouts. Had two fights last week in quick succession (at short notice), not to mention a head frying week at work and felt justified in blowing off a bit of steam.

No one is ever really 100%, but you can always give 100% of what you have.

You should be sharp as a knife then haha.

The beer at the weekend shouldn't be an issue come Friday.

    Good luck.

Bit of light sparring tonight. Feeling much sharper.

What was that I said about not fighting??

Cheers for the replies. Helped me refocus after a moment of doubt.

If you're a fighter, you want to fight. You shouldn't be worried about getting your ass kicked or not looking good. Take the opportunity to fight.

    Listen to big balls!

I have no issue with fighting at short notice. But I did question the wisdom of taking this upcoming fight due to the fact that I had hectic weekend to say the least and was feeling quite **** in the gym until last night.
