What a ****ing war great fight, nobody is going to dispute that... However my question isnt so much about the fight but how do people feel about Sierra refusing to take off any extra weight? The way I see it if you get a call to be a last min replacement and you accept to take the fight, your ass had better be able to meet the contracted weight limit... in other words No fighter or Trainer should be allowed to take a fight on short notice knowing they are not going to make the weight and when its clear they have an 8 pound advantage refuse to take off any additional weight, Obviously the trainer was looking for that advantage no doubt... However my point is that its un proffessional of them to take this fight and having no intention of making the weight... this speaks volumes of his trainer and the gym they represent....
They had Gonzales by the balls because they needed a credible last minute opponent for a televised card. I was in the dressing room with the fighters and the size difference was huge.
My point was I am sure they wanted a credible opponent but I dont think they somehow wanted one that was going to come in that heavy and refuse to take off weight... That is just a small example of the un proffessionalism that takes place in this sport, and Honestly Sierra comming from Wildcard boxing club, you would think they would represent themselves much better than they did last night, IMO out of class they should have never took the fight...
Gonzales was impressive (although he showed some flaws) in dealing with the bigger man. It was a step up from his previously scheduled opponent, Sugar Poo Buchanan. So in that sense he benefited by getting a more credible win. (although he probably wouldn't be in as much pain after facing Buchanan :yep) I'd like to see Gonzalez against an Alfonso Lopez or someone like that next. Sierra is a **** for never making the limit. Just compete at light heavyweight (where you will get KTFO constantly) you miserable coward. :deal
Imagine how fast Sierra would have ran out of gas if he had cut all that weight! It seemed clear to me that Sierra would beat Gonzalez if he had a proper 8 week camp, but by mid rounds his gas tank was on "E." As it turned out it was a very fun fight to watch, but a few days before hand Gonzalez was talking mad smack about fighters who are a lot better than Sierra. Hopefully the tough outing settled him down because he is not ready to step up. I'm with IB; I'd love to see Gonzalez/Lopez.
In all fairness Seirra did lose 5 1/2 lbs in 10 or so days. He did make "some" effort. But knowing he couldn't do it and still have ANY legs, he agreed to the non title and lower purse split which was admirable and still made it a fight. Even weakened and without a camp though he showed why Top Rank was so quick to discard such a highly regarded(and paid) prospect.(Gonzo) I guess they felt like if he was gonna make it, it wasn't be from them cherrypicking for him no more. But he did stay on his feet vs the bigger puncher, and showed some power himself. Really NEEDS to keep that L hand up when he aint throwing though.......he coulda gotta seriously hurt by a Bute or a Kessler etc.
