Excellent jab with a solid right hand cross, very good left hook too. I still have him beating Delahoya by two points. All the work Quartey did after the 6th round should have been enough, but George Foreman said it perfectly in the commentary that I can't argue against. "A challenger can't take away a champion's title by getting himself knocked down in last round." A draw would have been a better result with an immediate rematch, but Delahoya wanted nothing to do with Quartey a second time.
Bent over without even the benefit of a reach around against Forrest. :-( Not that the fight was particularly relevant at the time, both were seriously faded. Still would have been a great win, in a relative manner, for Ike. He was manhandling Vernon physically as well, kind of odd.
I hate **** like that. First, Quartey was just as much a champion as DLH (bs politics as usual), and second, yes, a challenger can very well take away a champs title by getting knocked down- HE JUST HAS TO WIN MORE ****ING ROUNDS.
What bothers me most is the fact that Delahoya chickened out of a rematch. He knew he barely survived this fight with Quartey and made sure never to step in the ring with him again. He beats Julio Cesar Chavez convincingly but gives him a rematch because he wasn't satisfied with his victory the first time? I don't understand how Delahoya can be proud of himself for taking the money, the victory and running away from a Quartey rematch, just like he did in the last round against Trinidad.
Do you remember a story detailing how Quartey was disrespected by crowds back home when he lost to DLH? I couldnt believe it.
I always thought Ike needed a better trainer for some polishing. Maybe that develops his right hand and doesn't leave him open for counters as much. His fight with Espana made more people take notice of the guy. Prior to that he dominated a lot of 3rd raters and looked real promising, but the Espana fight really made a lot more folks pay attention.
From memory inactivity seems to have been a big problem with him. He hadn't fought in nearly a year and a half prior to his fight with Oscar, took another year off before meeting Vargas, then didn't fight again for half a ****ing decade?!? This basically killed any momentum his career could gather. A pity as he was a beast for a period there and as mentioned was in possession of one of the best jabs you could hope to see. My favourite fight of his was his squashing of the tough Vince Phillips not long before Phillips gave Kostya Tszyu a beating. It was on the undercard of a Sweet Pea fight and to my eyes at the time Quartey was the one who looked like the best welterweight in the world,Trinidad included. A pity his career kind of sputtered out.
Quartey made a lot of money in his native Ghana investing in real estate. He was smart enough to use his money from boxing to better himself, so he didnt need to fall back on boxing. I think he came back to boxing for fun, but he soon got turned off by the politics that led to him leaving in the first place. He probably should have got the nod against Forrest.
I'm a Forrest fan but still believe he should've got the decision against him. I scored it 96-93 Quartey. Possibly Vargas is one of the only people to beat him clearly and no doubt Winky beat him up the worst. That was a faded Ike but still Winky beat him more clear than anyone I've seen. I'm going to watch Vargas-Quartey again soon. I've rewatched De La Hoya-Quartey and think that DLH didn't beat him clearly enough as the fight is debated to this day. He was too tense against Ike.
If you watch any of Oscar's ring walks he looks like he is doing a death march. Unlike most fighters, Oscar isn't good at covering his nerves with an act of bravado.
Quartey was a fine boxer, who maybe just lacked a bit of polish to be a truly elite fighter. Loved watching the Bazooka.
"Going into the last three rounds Oscar Delahoya is in trouble." Anyone remember Jim Lampley saying that in the commentary after the tenth round? Notice how Oscar was shaking his head in frustration? He clearly looked like the loser and the expression on his face didn't seem confident of victory. There's no way Oscar did enough in that fight to beat Quartey. Regardless of the last round, Quartey had Oscar hurt in this fight more than Oscar hurt him.
I still can't score Quartey-DLH for Ike. I come up with 114-113 for Oscar everytime. It was a very tight fight, and regardless, Ike was more hurt in the 12th than any fighter was in any round before. He was damn near finished, and a big, decisive 10-8, to me, was the difference in a good, nip and tuck fight.
