I just think that Hopkins completly over acted on that one. Joe barely grazed him. 99% of the posters on here talk about how Joe has no power on his shots and yet a tap on the cup causes that kind of a reaction from Bhop? How hurt do you guys think that he really was?
There are always the odd wayward low shots in every boxing match, it was obviously part of Bernard's pre fight strategy for the 43 year old to use it to take a break.
It's impossible to say for sure, but the second attempt pretty much convinced me that he was lobbying for help from Cortez. And to Cortez's credit, he wasn't buying it the second time. Hopkins deserved to get knocked out for pulling that stunt.
It was the reason behind by new avatar....but seriously it was strategic and he needed a break so when he was givin the opp to take one he did it
i just posted on another thread that the blow was definitely low and not a "grazer" (but still a calzaghe shot). we don't know, it could have well hurt. but that said, i'm sure hopkins "milked it" a little but who in their right mind wouldn't have in that type of fight?
That's it. Nobody but Bernard really knows. Speaking for myself, I don't like to be even pinky flicked in the nuts, so even a "soft" punch in the right spot could make you want to puke.
I think he was trying to get a point taken away from Calzaghe because he figured he had at least half of the rounds won at that time, and this was his opportunity to get up on the cards. Plus I also think he realized this little Welsh/Italian dude wasn't going anywhere all night regardless of what he hit him with.
ONly Hopkins can generate enough bull**** so that eventually there is a thread here dedicated to one glancing beltline blow.
minor borderling shot with no power in it. Hopkins wasnt hurt, he was cheating to get hi sbreathe back. Hop hit joe with worse blows to the groin and got no response what so ever.
I agree, which is why the second attempt sealed the deal for me. As someone who has followed and admired Hopkins for a long time, the Sven Ottke comparison bouncing through my head was not at all comfortable. Please retire, Bernard.
you guys really think Bernard needed a breather? He didn't seem tired. Even towards the end of the fight he didn't seem particularly fatigued. If anything I think that he knew it was a close fight and hoped that a point deduction from Joe could help secure it for him but I really don't think that he needed a breather.
he said his "privates" (wihch should mean more than one) fell out the cup when he hit him and needed and excuse to refit it.
Shortly before the low blow, he took a combination from range that I can't ever recall him getting hit with in the past, and I had the thought that he actually might get stopped. Who can say for sure, though.
