3rd round..Brinkley standing infront of Quillin getting eaten up with right hands, Brinkley is in survival mode now just trying to clinch..Quillin manhandling him, just so much stronger.

HUGE right hand staggers Brinkley, Cortez steps in then bizzarely lets it go on. Huge left hook, right hand combo, Quillin unloads the heavy artillery. Brinkley getting battered on the ropes...out on his feet Cortez steps in to call a hault to the assualt.

    Quillin TKO 3.

Trashy USBO 168lbs strap wrapped around his waist and happy with his nights work.

So, Slip seeing as it's only me and you here, what did you think of Quillin's performance and didn't you feel that the stoppage was a little premature?

Well, Slip Quillin looked class in there but we have to factor into what he was facing. That looked like an out of shape Brinkley who couldn't do anything to him, but Quillin established his jab and did what he had to do. He looked poised and controlled, if not a little robotic at times and he tended to wing that right hand, especially when he was trying to throw it as an uppercut. All in all a good performance, his power was impressive and he was hurting a solid journeyman like Brinkley with almost every shot. Like to see him improve his footwork a little bit, he looks very flat on his feet at times and he definitely has to stay more active. I think it has stunted his growth not fighting often enough. He doesn't look as fluid as he did in his earlier days. He looks HUGE for the weight and i'm looking forward to his future prospects as he could shake things up a bit. Onwards and upwards.

On the 'premature' stoppage, Brinkley was never gonna win that fight, he was getting hurt with every shot and i don't really have a problem with it. You could see Brinkley's head going back violently with everyshot and nothing was coming back when he was effectively trapped on the turnbackle. Just saved him from further unneccessary punishment.

 Yeah, he obviously shouldn't be held up to the "Kid Chocolate" standard any more than all the other boxers who co-opt the nicknames of legends (a list that does include "Sugar" Shane Mosley, as much as I love him).

Very good SMW prospect, though. He already had all the tools, and now he's got the right direction through Roach. He could develop into a real player by next year if Golden Boy moves him along at a steady incline.

Cortez stopped it faster than a lot of other American refs would have, but about two or three whiplash shots after most British refs. :yep

It was one of those "slightly premature, but headed that way in a hurry anyhow" type of stoppages IMO.

Who would you put him in with next, IB?

He still needs a little seasoning and to iron out a few wrinkles IMO. I'd get him out again as soon as next month. As i said inactivity has stunted his growth and he's not as fluid as i remember seeing him. He kind of has a Trinidad feel about him when raises the heel of that back foot and he goes stalking. He's ganna be fun to watch from here. Hope they don't feed him to the sharks before he's ready though, like they did with Jacobs.

Quillin should fight again soon, good prospect indeed.

Never rated Brinkley, but seeing in his last fight it took Bute lingerbto get rid of him, he was a good gauge for Quillin, who through inactivity has missed out on a lot of development.

He looks a beast at the weight. Allan Green, AndreDirrell or Edison Miranda would be the next logical progression IMO.

Damn, I thought Brinkley looked pretty good against Bute, caught him with some good rights, stole a couple of rounds actually..............and then Quillin annihilates him in 3.

    This kid has potential.

Wow the guy has filled out a ton. Last I saw him I wasn't overly impressed, he seemed to be going through the motions and had a much frailer looking freame. This was some time ago. I know Brinkley is small at super middle but Kid Chocolate looks beastly size wise.

What are you implying, Sir TFFP. That these young studs (Quillin, Ortiz et al) are going in with Sugar Shane Mosley's Jin & Juice special...;)

 Nothing of the sort. I'll put it down to 'natural' growth. I just clicked the video expecting these frail looking guy with legs and arms all over the place but he's a beast suddenly. Then again I havn't seen him in a year or so.

Miranda is a good shout, Flea. He's always a good gauge. He's become the Mayorga of the division and that would be a nice showcase fight for him. Not sure about Dirrell though, they won't and shouldn't go there unless it's for something big.

He needs a couple of showcase fights on major network TV. That was on Telefura last night (Rafa Marquez commentating btw) some obscure Mexican channel infront of a small crowd. He has enough of a dig to get a couple of highlight reel KO's over the likes of Green on network TV and then he should be let loose on these shark infested waters he's decided to tread on.

I get the feeling that year out of the ring will come back to haunt him though. Looks very ungainly at times and timing was slightly off, which is classic inactivity syndrome.

Feed him a patsy within the next month. Give him a 20-30 guy the following month, and a 15-20 guy a few months later.

Then he can have a few months off and take someone in the 6-10 bracket.

Pretty unreasonable by most peoples standards nowadays but he should try to punch through the ring rust. Green and Miranda are fair opponents IMO, if he wants to take a few months off preparing for the next fight.

But rustiness and Edisons right hand are not a good combination IMO :nono
