Very tough, very exciting to watch, and might have done more under different circumstances.. Was also the cousin of another decent fighter in Chris Byrd.
Brewster wasnt a journeyman. He was a top ten contender for his time. That being said, he never really perfected any type of style. He looked the part, had some size and power, but he couldnt box very well. He was outboxed by Charles Shufford and Cliff Etienne for crying out loud. If guys stood with him he had a good shot, but if they showed him any type of movement, he struggled.
He was a journeyman AND a top 10 contender. Lots of contenders are journeymen. I rarely use the term 'journeyman' to mean a crappy boxer who loses as many as he wins - against other craopy boxers ! - but a lot of people seem to use it that way. Journeyman actually means someone who is GOOD at what he does, a very solid professional, a good craftsman. But not a GREAT one. Someone who is below a master, has no SPECIAL talent or exceptional skills, but someone who is a clear cut above average. I think Lamon Brewster was well within journeyman range of professional boxers.
Big punch, great chin, huge heart that refused to lose. He did have decent skills, it's just he tried to be slick while having slow feet and not too quick reactions and only being 6'0 with short arms. If he'd have been trained to bob and weave out of a peekaboo guard and pressure he could have been something dare I say special, maybe not though Still he has a good win list with Wlad, Golota and Krasniqi and entertaining losses in wars
this...^ i always enjoyed his fights, one thing that can't be denied was his heart, the guy always came to fight and would give it his all, it just wasn't always enough tho...
I think of a guy like Ross Purrity, Garing Lane or Quinn Navarre as a journeyman type. Not really good enough to consistently compete inside the top ten. Brewster more a contender. I guess you can define as you want.
Reminded me very much of riddick bowe for some reason. I tend to believe byrd did enough to earn a draw with golota so for me lamont was a very good hw but never the best of his era. Victories over wlad and andrew do enough to give him a top ten place. People also forget how close the lyak fight was.
Very underrated HW of his time. His left hook was devastating as you can see in the sizzle reel bellow. This content is protected Wanna know why Klit bum boys downplay Brewster and massively over rate Sam Peters? Its because they pretend that Klitschko didn't actually lose to Brewster rather he lost to himself. Ignoring the fact that Brewster's left hook caught Wlad clean to body and head , they pretend Wladdy gassed out , therefore it had nothing to do with Brewster. Since Wlad beat Peter in a life and death struggle , Peter has to be imagined far better than he actually is. To make Wlad look better , get it! Reality is Brewster would send Peter to sleep savagely because he is much better than him.
He was another rubbish boxer Vladimir got chinned by Vladimir said he was poisoned or ill can’t remember
