Was the Nunn/Barkley match exciting, or was it like the Starling fight? And didn't some people think that Barkley deserved to win it?
It was definately more competitive than the Starling fight. After his bout with Marlon Starling, someone should have placed a warning label on it saying " do not attempt to operate heavy machinary after watching this bout." It was really that boring. As for people's opinions on the Barkley fight, yes there were some people booing the decision. I myself felt that the fight could have possibly been a draw, but did not care enough to despute the decision. Neither of those performances could be labeled as some of Nunn's better outings.
I saw Nunn beat our own (Brit) Crawford Ashley, stopping him with body shots in a super-middle defence and I thought his skill was evident. But he really screewed up a big unification fight against Benn when he lost to Little, largely thru not maintaining weight properly. A properly conditioned Nunn would have easily outpointed Benn I think and that may have set up a rematch with Toney. A typical case of a telented fighter wasting it thru lack of dedication I think.
Leonard and Nunn got into it at a club.Leonard went over to Nunn and started saying how he could beat Nunn.Nunn responed by saying " I"ll still love you Ray after I knock you out".Leonard had had a little too much to drink I believe and was irrated at the fact that everyne kept talking about the possibility of a Nunn-Leonard bout.
Nunn was so talented it wasn't even funny.I used to watch his early bouts on ESPN and I tell you his opponnents couldn't touch him.You have to check out Nunn's bouts before he was champ. Nunn's biggest problem was that he couldn't keep away from his hometown in Davenport.Everytime he went there he would get into trouble. He started leaving traing camps DURING training and going there.Eventually he and the Gossens split which was bad for both. Started doing/selling drugs and by the time of the Toney bout it was widley known that Michael wasn't training like he should. Years latter was arrested on charges of drug possesion and intent to distribute.I believe got something like 50 years.Basically he'll be in prison for life. The other problem with Nunn was he came along when both Hearns and Leonard and Duran were still active and having big bouts.Nunn didn't fit in due to his lack of fanbase and boxing style.Arum was pissed because Nunn started taking the attention away from Leonard,Hearns.People started to ask for Nunn vs Leonard,Hearns and Arum knew that Nunn would beat both AT THAT STAGE IN THEIR CARRERS and didn't want to make either bouts with Nunn.
