I'm watching the Williams-Lara fight, and I must say Paul doesn't look like he has slipped. It looks like he is just fighting a guy who is a top contender in the JW division who was thouroughly prepared to fight him. Paul is just fighting the was he was always trained to fight. Unfortunately, Paul hasn't had much amateur evperience, so he is inexperienced compared to Lara, who has had over 320 amateur fights. This fight also shows the limitations of George Peterson as a trainer. He doesn't fight the way his frame suggests he should. Lara's trainer is telling him the way he is supposed to fight, the way to beat Williams. Pauls corner is just telling him to get off first.
I don't think Paul can get any further with the people he currently has in his corner. He can't fight the same way against everybody. You have to make adjustments and be prepared to change your fight plan. He's not getting any good information now. A 6'2" guy with a 78 inch reach should have a killer jab, and Paul barely throws his. It's pathetic. It's dissapointing to hear Williams' corner give him **** advice. He either needs to get a different trainer, or just retire.
Lara is an underrated fighter who is very tricky and fast. He should win a title. Big props to Ronnie Shields for having him thouroughly prepared.

I've never been a fan. Hes always been easy to hit and is mostly successful because hes a giant who can cut to a low weight for his size. I was saying a long time ago that once he started fighting guys who were a little closer to his size and/or could crack a little, hed be having problems.

Huge waste of talent, had Emanuel Steward or Hell even a mediocre trainer with smarts gotten their hands on him when he was young, we'd likely be talking about an ATG. Instead we are talking about a very defensively inept fighter.

I'm also thinking that the rehydrating is taking a toll on him. He rehydrated to 170 lbs. That's a huge jump, and constantly doing that can weaken a fighter.

The guy eats shots like they are candy. I give the guy props for being able to take shots, but that's going to leave him punchy when his career is over.

Paul Williams has had a good run nahmsayin' but now nahmsayin' the blueprint on beating him is out nahmsayin'. He and his manager nahmsayin have no desire nahmsayin' to correct his flaws nahmsayin'.

Agreed. I still consider PW top 5 both at 154 and 160.
His trainer should at least be able to work in collaboration with some top rated trainer, add some knowledge, refine Paul's skills. No need to part ways, just open his mind.
I believe PW size is even greater than you mentioned, he's 6'3" with an 82" wingspan, should be fighting from the outside all the way.

Yeah, those are Tommy Hearns' dimensions. To see Paul just rush in with his hands low trying to land long uppercuts is not acceptable to good trainers. He makes his opponent look better by coming in while the other guy is throwing. Sergio isn't a huge puncher, but the way Paul rushes in, it's easy to see him getting knocked out by anyone with a bit of power.
If any fighter ever needed Emmanual Steward as a trainer, it is Paul Williams.
