First I'd like to say that Williams looked decent to good in his performance last Saturday v Ishida. I knew Ishida would be too out matched before the fight, but there were still a good number of people giving him a legit shot at Paul. Speaking of "shot", I don't think Williams is completely done. I think his obvious weakness is to slick southpaws. He's still a nightmare to a lot of orthodox fighters.

The first thing I noticed in this fight was that Paul's balance was crap, but I guess it's always been like that. It just look extra bad in this fight especially in the first few rounds. Because of that, I think a lot of Ishida's punches looked more devastating than they really were. Ishida got Paul's attention in the fight, but I don't think he was ever hurt. Yes, his chin is broken, but it's not as bad as people are making it out to be. Lara is a fairly good puncher and should have KOed him too then.

I also noticed that Paul is a little more defensively responsible. His defense is still bad, but I can't notice in the fight that he's consciously thinking about defending himself when he punches. Even when he comes in off balance (and hands down) throwing a punch, he'll notice that he's open to a counter and make an effort to defend. You can rag on his defense, but he threw twice as much as Ishida and still landed at a higher percentage :conf

I also liked his feinting in the fight, something a lot of fighters don't do. His stamina was superb like always, but his power was very lacking. Also his inside fighting was good in the fight despite his reach. Some will say, "well he didn't look good. He just looked like the old Paul Williams". Well the Old Paul Williams was a top 5 p4p fighter.

I don't think Paul's going to make a miraculous comeback or anything, but this fight got me thinking. Who in the division would you pick to beat Williams except for Lara?

If his chin was broken then he would've been ko'd against Lara and Ishida but yet he wasn't even close to bein dropped against either. His chin is still one of the best in the game and his defense is still one of the worst.

    At 154?

Cotto, Martinez again, Kirkland, and maybe even Canelo. Canelo-Williams would be a great 50-50 fight and a huge test for Alvarez.

Williams looked very decent in this last fight, but just not enough IMO to beat the top fighters of the division right now.

Besides Martinez I'm not too sure who has a great shot to beat him. TBH he's brave(or stupid, or both) for using the same style but he did dominate Ishida but I fear the next counterpuncher he faces with a little more pop than Lara will be his undoing. He did shutout Ishida and should remain at 154. He is maybe a bit past prime but still a credible win for anyone. Still would love to see him face Floyd but even Paul accepted that ain't happening. Once Canelo grows a pair it will be great to see him face Paul.

I think williams has the chance of beating kirkland and canelo. high work rate and decent enough pop. he can honestly knock kirkland out. he has proven power and kirkland's chin is what some people would call glass. in that fight, it's nothing less than a war, a pure war. williams vs. canelo is a really good test for canelo but one I lean toward canelo winning, with serious rough spots. I mean, neither canelo or kirkland can outbox williams en route to knocking him out like martinez has proven he can do, or simply outbox him like quintana and lara did, neither are they slick enough to strictly lure him into a knockout punch. they would both go about it in a workman like way, and williams has never succumbed to a knockout in that fashion.

it was a good win for Paul.... Knocked some rust off and got some confidence. I thought he'd win but wasn't sure how he'd look. I thought he looked pretty good all things considered but he needs another fight like this last one.... One he will win, but be pushed...

Kirkland anyone? I have Paul taking the W. I'll be the minority but Paul is James's nightmare.

Nice comeback fight coming off a brutal brutal loss and then a poor outting....

Solid performence, and Im super happy he won.....

I do think some are going a little far with these improvements williams showed (imo). To me, as a long time fan, it was pretty much the same old Williams for the most part, I think he was able to calm down a little and do his thing a lot because of Ishidas shortcomings....

But anyways, good for Williams, was rooting hardcore for him

Now, it would be nice if he could get a fight with some of the bigger names around him and get some good paydays and some profile/legacy boosts before he calls it a career, hopefully sooner rather then later.

    War Williams

You could tell that he made a concious effort to improve but then again that could have been due to the fact that Ishida was as tall as him and he didnt have to bend over that much. He was still leading with his head, telegraphing his punches and throwing that uppercut from too far out. I really like P Willie cause he's for real about his **** but he needs to really get serious about them flaws or he is gonna get knocked out again. Way back when he fought Verno Phillips you could tell that he would have trouble in later fights. I know he dosnt have to fight that way because he didnt do it against Winkie or Margarito. He just gets lazy in the exicution of his total fight game and that wont do fighting top flight fighters.:bbb:bbb
