Saying that, Sixto does have quite a poor total record, but his fights at BW are solid showings. I only have him losing in his prime to two men there and both he beat (Salica and Jeffra). He also has a very good run as champ when being a champ means something.
He did lose an awful lot of fights in the FW division, but can that really be held against him in terms of this division? Twice champion for an aggregate of roughly 3 years. Faced such men as: Jeffra, Salica (x2), Sanstol, Huat, Marino, Leitham (x2), Casanova, Archibald, Quintana, KO Morgan - Salica (L), Jeffra (L). If I give him less credit for his title reign due to his inconsistent nature I could see him dropping to about 17th I suppose.
Tough job man. I like Rafa but can't see how he makes a top 20. Was never the proper champion and didn't distinguish himself from Sahaprom (who was the better talent and beat better names overall imo - Nishioka, Chuvatana etc). Lora and Jibaro were a bit more talented than Canizales and perhaps beat better names despite not having his longevity. Not saying Canizales shouldn't be in, just an observation. Becerra and Macias might deserve consideration, though I suppose I haven't given it much thought if. Maybe their early retirements hurt in the long run, but they both beat plenty of good names. I like to think that Medel deserves a spot in any top 20. I know he had a lot of losses, but he was thrown to the sharks at a tender age and then fought way past his best against a ridiculous level of competition, plus he seemed to have a journeyman attitude half the time. I also think that if we knew more about a lot of his losses, we'd find that many of them were fiddles and hometown decisions in the Eddie Perkins Syndrome mould, though I have no concrete proof for that notion. And his CV is genuinely outstanding, though you have look deep into the era to see how many good contenders he actually beat in what was one the great eras in all of boxing history imho. He reminds in a way of a lower division Archie Moore, though without the longevity and determination. Even his style was similar with the expert trap setting and lethal sneaky punching. He looks excellent on film and to me just seems to be one of those fighters whose ranking I think would improve considerably if we knew more about him. But I'm biased, straight up. Just love the bloke.
Marquez might not have set himself miles above his contemporaries but he was a deserving number 1 for me I do appreciate there are those who rank sahaprom higher though. Lora only just missed the cut. Raton wasn't around long enough at the top level for me and Medel might have some hidden glitz to his record but I can't make room for him. My main concerns now are Pintor, Lujan and Sixto tbh.
I would say most of the above names belong in the top 20, and all in the top 40. I think Jofre, McGovern, Olivares, and Zarte belong in the top 5, but you could argue another name or two, as long as Jorfe makes the cut. One odd fact about this division. The KO% among some is very high, sometimes even higher than heavyweight. Not sure why.
Yeah I'm sold on lowerin Sixto. I'm good with that, like Vic says, too inconsistent to be seen as a dominant champion. I'm happy with Marquez though. I'm gonna have another look at Lora, Pintor and Lujan then I'm done with this endeavor for now!
Whether you consider Rafa' no.1 or not he's not top 29 material. Ribs, outstanding post BTW. Medel's win over Harada was incredible. Amongst many other things. Chucho>>>>>>Rafa'
And fair play to you Luf for putting it down. Always enjoy these threads and end up learning and debating. I can't really write lists but can have a gut feeling when given a collection of fighters to rank or rank one against the other. So I'm pretty comfortable with Chucho over Rafa, but that's because I don't see Marquez as top 20 material.
Then I'll be guilty of over rating him but his place is secure in there definitely (in terms of how I see boxing atleast anyways). More pressing to me now is whether I can fit in Lora, Pinto or Lujan :think
:good it's all good man. this board has enough good personalities that I'm happy putting a list up and having it constructively ripped to shreds. As I said at the start, these lower weights aren't really my strong point but I'm trying to learn as much as I can (even if I have too much love for rafa )
:happy Chucho>>>>>Barrera/Morales/JMM too, since my Barrera thread is probably going to die on it's arse. I'm going to have to brush up on my Spanish and dig through some Hispanic boxing forums to see if anything on Medel is more forthcoming. Or ask Vic to do it for me, if he's..erm...reading this...just a thought....
Find something on Medel even in spanish is a hard job Tin, I tell you that, I´ve looked around trying it and haven´t found much tbh.....sadly.
Not sure what Lujan did to warrant this type of consideration...But if you find it, presuming it is there....It enhances Chandlers standing and gives an argument for the inclusion of Pintor as well.
