I'm just curious what the Classic Forum would like to share in regards to Rocky Graziano. I haven't come across too many threads on him here. To me, he's a colorful character. Not a great boxer obviously, but a hell of a puncher, a real warrior, and a funny *******. His chapter from In This Corner had me in stitches. I wish I could get my hands on Somebody Up There Likes Me. I tell ya, if I could, if I could get my hands on that damn book, I'd moiderize it. I'd read it from cover to cover, I'd read it so god damn much. I'd read it so damn much the words would be burned on the inside of my eyelids I'd read it so much. The other day I was watching The Way It Was: Zale/Graziano. That was good. I liked the part (around 29:00) where The Rock says "...y'know, I was an Italian. I shoulda... done somethin' different, I shoulda had a gun in the ring wit me..." what a character this guy was. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcMDraAEEvg[/ame]
The Way It Was with Graziano and Robinson is fun to watch, you can see how Robinson liked Graziano a lot and Graziano was a very well liked guy in the Boxing World (at least by some :yep: )
I was raised with a healthy respect for Rocky Graziano. My dad used to say, "If a guy can make it that far on punch and mean, he's a dangerous motherf***er." I agree. What a beast.
The statement was "Graziano was the best middlweight in the welterweight division". (no Jr MW back in those days)
Again, a very colorful guy and a terrific puncher but he only fought two serious middleweights in his career and was ko'ed in under twelve rounds total in three of those four bouts ...
Rollin' up my sleeves to post some Rocky recollections. Like Jimmy Durante said: "I got a million of 'em!"
Rocky was my rabbi at Stillmans gym. Like every other kid in the neighborhood, we fought to carry his gym bag. He was the Pied Piper -- a kid, just bigger. He looked, dressed and talked like every guy that hung on the corner. The first time I talked to him was when I cut fourth grade and took trains 'n a bus to Stillmans. I stood in the gym entrance and watched Rocky hit a speed bag while he smoked a cigarette. He finally looked down. "Why ain't you in school?" "Why ain't you?" I said He roaared with laughter, hoisted me on his shoulders and introduced me to every ATG in the gym. (more to come)
What memory's i have of Rocky Graziano who I saw from prelim boy to 1945 when he kod a neighbor of mine Harold Green at MSG. ? I saw his sensational knockout of the "new Joe Louis", Billy Arnold who kod almost ALL his 45 oppnents, and was an 8-1 favorite to flatten the East Side Graziano...But Rocky took a terrible beating and was in danger of having the bout stopped, but Graziano unloaded a right hand grenade on Arnold and kod Arnold in the 3rd round , making Rocky the best gate attraction of his time and the rest is history as they say...What other thoughts come to mind watching his career progress...I could go on, but what the heck...
This fight ive been searching for ages and while watching a espn doc about the rock which is on utube u can see this ko FEROCIOUS forget about it
Characters like Rocky Graziano are what made boxing so great. I loved watching the film of the 3rd Graziano/Zale fight. The Man of Steele came out with alot of intensity but he had his left up with a healthy respect for Rocky`s righthand. When Graziano hit you, you stayed hit. :bbb
I have mixed feelings on rocky graziano, usually i love crude sluggers with raw power but he was lacking a chin and very undisciplined. Grazianos punches weren't even on the grid, so off balance and wild... ferocious power but wild
