OK not sure which part of this statement to correct first, lol Paul Newman was both Rocky Graziano in somebody up there likes me and Luke in 'Cool Hand Luke.' Marlon Brando in "the wild one" is the guy who said "whatya got?" IDK he's so crude and reckless without the chin to back it up.
IN in final years Rocky used to live in my neighborhood and Jake lived in my building down the block ... I'd see Jake in the elevator and Rocky used to hang out on the corner outside his building on 57th and Second Ave at the newsstand sitting on a milk crate .. real throwback ... even then as an old man with a shot memory he'd be acknowledged constantly by passerby's ... amazing memories seeing them together drinking coffee at a diner on the corner time and again ...
To understand Rocky Graziano , before he became "civilized,' a boxing event occured 9 months before Graziano's come from behind destruction of Billy Arnold,in 1945 at MSG which made Rocky a star and a household name...In June, 1944 I was at a fight between Rocky Graziano and Frankie Terry at the old Dexter Park, home of the semi-pro Bushwick's baseball team...What occured at that fight ,I never saw before nor after... Graziano and Frankie Terry kicked each other , kneed each other, took out their mouthpieces and bit each other, wrestled each other to the canvas alongst with the poor referee, and utter bedlam prevailed...Order was somehow restored and Rocky won by a tko..We in the crowd were stunned by this wild mayhem and I a youngster was shaken up by the riot called a boxing bout... But the real irony was that Rocky Graziano and Frankie Terry were SECOND COUSINS. Imagine if they weren't ? Rocky Graziano , coming up was the most colorful and exciting fighter I ever saw in the ring...I miss those days...
Im bumping this back up to see if anyone here new what Rocky was like in the last few yrs of his life.
