Thoughts on Steve Cunningham's heavyweight debut

    I watched this last night and wondered what people thought of his performance against Jason Gavern. I really enjoyed it. I think you very rarely (if ever) see as technically a nice performance as Cunningham did Saturday night. His jab was brilliant, he wa really snappnig that out and he fought well in the inside at time making space for bodyshots. I loved how he would double and triple up on the left hook, sometimes turning Gavern before doing it- when do you see that at heavyweight these days? I thought his right handa was a little sloppy at times and think he should have straightened it up somewhat. Gavern in the first half was trying in spots then seemed to just stop throwing all together. Of course its hard to predict what Cunningham is capable of at this weight when facing a opponent as limited as Gavern. But then again Gavern tends to be usually more aggressive (when I've seen him) and Cunningham stopped hm from doing that with his great jab I think. What did you think on his performance?

    it was a pretty decent showing, only thing USS lacked (as expected) was power at HW, ohter than that, good showing, a bit like today's HW Micheal Moore, without the southpaw stance

    Steve is cool but he won't be any type of force at HW.

    He looked like vintage Steve Cunningham and did what he had to do. Considering the circumstances of where he's at, Team Cunningham could not have hoped for a better heavyweight debut.

    the guy has barely average power at cruiserweight which speaks volumes on how his power holds up in the heavyweight ranks....

    I guess you mean Michael Moorer... But he had a lot more power as Steve at HW. Only it was nothing like what he was at LHW.

    I would say ideally if he can land another fight very soon, he should take on another opponent of similar caliber to further adjust to the new fighting weight.

    Cunningham is one of the slicker fighters at Heavyweight by default upon moving up, but he probably isn't going to make much noise there with his lacking chin and power once he steps up his competition.

    I'd like to see him fight a big European see how he gets on. He's fought in Germany before, mabye go back to fight someone like a Alexander Dimitrenko. Or Francesco Pianeta, that might be ok. Still need to see his fight with Botha though.

    Hes kinda light for heavyweight.

    6'3 and 207? Same height as Malik Scott but 20 lbs lighter
