Thoughts on Roberto Duran vs Vilomar Fernandez title bout in 1977. Duran chased Vilomar for 13 rounds, cutting off the ring, took him out with a shot to the liver in round 13.

Duran had a succession of defenses in 76/77 against defensive fighters - runner Lou Bizarro, spoiler Edwin Viruet and Vilomar Fernandez. Vilomar was the best of that bunch and did have some early success in the fight before Duran ground him down and Fernandez collapsed as much through exhaustion as from any one punch.

    Here's my card:
    Roberto Duran v Vilomar Fernandez

    1 10-9
    2 10-9
    3 9-10 (close)
    4 9-10 (close. he's a slippery ****er is Vilomar)
5 10-10 (ref tells Fernandez to fight)
    6 10-9
    7 10-9
    8 10-9
    9 10-9
10 10-9 (Duran starting to wear Fernandez down)
    11 10-10
    12 10-9
    (118-112)
    13 Duran KO Fernandez

Great post, Vilomar did upset Alexis Arguello in a ten round non title bout with his movement.

Anyone know why Fernandez fought a 1972 trilogy against Jose Resto? I know nothing about Resto, but he has a poor record according to boxrec.
Was there a reason they fought three times so close together? Controversy? Fernandez won all 3 apparently, just seems weird.
