Ruiz is much better than most thought, I actually picked him to win. I think Ruiz beats Wilder easily, although I now rate the rematch v Joshua as 50-50.
I think his first thought was to sell himself to the US public, he did a lot of press for this fight in the US and that's and risky thing to do when preparing for afight, he underestimated Ruiz like many did and he paid the price. His priority wasn't to win it was to look good KOing Ruiz and that saw him stand and trade with Ruiz. He literally gave up his height and reach and it lost him the fight. He dropped Ruiz with a combo on the inside and that gave him the impetus to stay inside and that was a mistake. If he had simply kept it long like he did with Povetkin and slowly break him down he could of won the fight but because he was looking to impress jumped on his first chance to finish Ruiz and got clocked with a shot he didn't see coming and never really recovered.
Just saw highlights. Not sure what shots he took on the chin, but on the dome, temple, top of the head. AJ seamed really gassed as well. Like it was more about stamina than anything else. 1st KD Aj was breathing mouth wide open. It seams his drops was equilibrium shots & maybe he is a PED head. Breathing way too hard for 6 rounds. What I learned from the highlights is that Ruiz can take a flush punch & Aj cn't take shots to the temple & may gas at anytime. Congrats Ruiz. I've been asking for 3 upsets, one down 2 to go!
It is interesting that nearly every round in the corner Mcracken told told Joshua to stop loading up with his hook and just jab and throw the right hand. He just kept doing it, and paid the price. It was a counter right over it that set up the final sequence.
AJ has a weak jaw. He lacked heart tonight. When he gets home and hears all the trash talk. He'll get his fire back and will win the rematch. But his chin will always be an issue.
I do not like excuses, but I am trying to think about something here. Kalambay came to fight Nunn in 1989 and lost and I always thought the time difference from Italy and all that.. It can mess with someone's mind. Joshua fought in New York near 11,,, which then in England it was near 4 in the morning. I just wonder how the fight would be different in the UK. Now, I don't put weight on people saying Buster was another Buster for Tyson as he was for Evander in 1990, but time changes and things like that are different. If someone has another variable. The rematch will show the truth. I hope it is in UK so we see how Joshua fights there. It does seem like Joshua was caught in another syndrome, the Khan situation of landing punches and then leaving himself open when he is trying to land again.
Its an obvious weakness of his - hes done it so many times now, he rushes for the kill when he thinks hes got it. Playing possum can unlock Joshua.
Then he is mentally weak and isnt built for this. That is problably the worst case scenario. If this is in fact what happens he needs to step away until he gets his mind right or should just retire.
Yeah but thats just a symptom of a bigger problem. HIs chin isnt very good and his punch recovery is terrible. He caught Ruiz with a clean brutal left hook and Ruiz got up fighting and appeared to recover quickly.
I didn’t mean it like that because I don’t think he’s mentally weak, look what he done in the klitschko fight. I just meant it all seemed like the trip to America was just a holiday, a training camp in the sun with his mates having a laugh (from what I’ve seen on his snapchat). His mind was elsewhere and although he wouldn’t admit it , he took Ruiz lightly.
Ah I misunderstood my bad. We will see in the rematch if this was just a simple case of looking past an opponent. Even if that is the case it really makes me question his dedication. At this level you should not be over looking anyone. Cant wait for the rematch.
I think AJ will smash him . I really wouldn't put Ruiz over most in top 10 based on that fight particularly getting knocked down with what seemed to be zoned out AJ . Povetkin, Whyte , Pulev, Ortiz, Wilder, Fury ...more...etc.. etc...defeat Ruiz, ppl are being taking for a ride here from a good fighter but not great one. lol
Yeah I can't help but think this myself. As good as Ruiz was I think he definitely benefited from Joshua making a lot of mistakes. He was good enough to take advantage and turned it into a bit of a beat down after the 3rd round. But I'm not entirely sold on that not being a one off great night for Ruiz/bad night for Joshua situation. Not saying it was at all a fluke or anything but I can't help thinking he may well of caught AJ with his pants down.
