Why Willams lost the fight: 1. He has no understanding of how to utilize his reach advantage. His jab isn't sufficient to keep his oponent at bay, his footwork has little or no purpose to it and he lacks understanding of ring generalship. 2. He doesn't adapt well. The left hand of Quintana was finding the mark all night, and the basic recipe never changed. Therefore, it was incumbant for Williams to make an adjustment (even as simple as holding the right hand highter) and he failed to do so. 3. Perhaps most importantly, Williams has little or no BASIC punching technique. My feeling is that he has sacrificed his punching technique for volume punching, in essence by keeping his arms loose and relaxed enough to create perpetual motion but to the detriment of sitting down on punches. On Quintana: Very impressive, solid boxing fundamentals and slick movement. MOST IMPORTANTLY, he has a game plan and the ability to maintain focus for a full 12 rounds. He is a disciplined fighter capable of adjusting, and he has now bested two fighters who seem to lack this skill. The Welter Picture Now: In a nutshell, "then there were two." There is only one fight to be made now, and its Cotto and Mayweather. I feel that Cotto's stock rose tremendously tonight, because if nothing else the perception is that he is that much better than the man who beat Williams. Seeing this fight also makes me appreciate Mayweather's ability to stay undefeated for all these years. Fighters have off nights, face styles that test them, and its a testament to any fighter who can figure this out along the way and not be beaten for all these years. Make the fight happen, Miguel and Floyd.
spot on on the williams analysis. he doesnt know how to use his height nor does he have good footwork. he is also very sloppy. pbf-cotto is the only fight to be made unless those two want to something like cotto-cintron/Am and pbf-quitana then pbf-cotto
Great insight. I think Williams can work on the above you listed. I think he will be back better than before.
Assertive. You know I was worried about Quintana's stamina in the mid rounds, it was clear he loss a little speed and STILL was able to tag Paul's face with his left hand. In situations like this its great to be an underdog, that gives you extra determination. I am very happy for what Quinatana did, he deserved it.
I didnt see the Fight.....but it would be a shame not to see PBF vs Cotto and well....Cotto needs to take care of buisness finish off Gomez, then the winner of Margarito v Cintron. Which by the way the more I look at it the more I dont see a gimme for either fighter. If Cintron can mentaly get himself together he has the skill and power to brutalize Margo and blast him out of there but that fragile Phsyc .....we will see..
I agree with it all. However in my book i will not say "then there was two" Mine is still "Then there was three" which are PBF, Cotto, and Mosley. I wouldnt mind seeing PBF fighting Mosley instead of Cotto. I would prefer Cotto but Mosley will do. Even at this stage Mosley is very very good and competitive. Those three i can not see losing to any of the other WW.
Quintana deserved this fight and the decison was correct. But i dont think he is a better fighter than williams. I thin that Williams over looked him. He probably didnt train like he would have for Cintron. He was very sloopy but this was not the same Williams that fought Margo.
Paul Williams has horrid/non existent technique, he was throwing hammerfist 1-2's. He has no defense and does not adapt to his opponent. He has very little boxing ability, and absolutely NO POP to his punches. His 2 biggest(only) advantages he has are his reach and workrate. He in not an accurate puncher. Unless your name is Lederman, no, it really doesn't.
Great post and insight & I'd like to add: He averaged only 67 punches a round & his "gimmick" was that he always threw over 100 per round. Unfortunately I too bought into the hype after the masterful Margarito masterpiece. (125 punches in a rd 12 wow!!) . It'll be interesting so see where his career goes from here. I'm thinking he could easily go the Mark Breland route in a hurry. This makes me appreciate even more what another tall, lanky, skinny kid did back in the 80's. :bbb :bbb :bbb :bbb :bbb :bbb :bbb :bbb :bbb :bbb :bbb :bbb :bbb
I thought the fight was close! Anyhow, if PW can make some adjustments in the gym and work on different faces to adapt to different styles then he can be even more dangerous
Congrats to QUINTANA! Honestly, after the beating he received against Cotto, I was ready to write him off as ruined. He fought a very good fight tonight and his rough spots were due more to conditioning than to Paul Williams. I would love to see Quintana-Berto.
