Fought in some real wars. Just below the ATG's. Gave the fans everything....and unfortunately he paid for it later in life.

Do u think if he took his craft more seriously he could have reached ATG status? Did he have the tools?

A very, very good fighter ( if he fought today he like many, many others from that era would be considered a great). One of the toughest boxers of the 80's.

Originally when "The Schoolboy" came up to the pros he was more of a boxer-puncher, and could out box the older fighters of that day. But due to him being "Mexican", and wanted to please his fans, he got drawn into wars with Olivares, Limon, Leon, Arguello, Boza-Edwards, plus all those B+ tough, LA type Mexican fighters who were trying to make a name for themselves too. The fighters from Feather to Lightweight in the 80's were a bunch of 'bad" hombres.

Only saw one fight of his on tape when he got overpowered by Mancini who looked much bigger and stronger.Guess Chancon was either pass his best then or lightweight was a division too big for him.

Yeah, he was past it by then and overmatched against a young, strong lightweight. You should watch him v. Danny Lopez at featherweight, 10 years earlier.

    Bobby Chacon.

He's a very good boxer and hits like hell. He was never able to figure out Olivares but he's a genuinely ATG in his own right. His showing against Lopez is the highlight of his career by a mile. An immovable object meets an unstoppable force and not did it produce.

He couldn't beat Olivares nor Arguello but he still gave them hell and was able to land hurtful shots.

I don't think he's amongst the best 10 FW in history nor do I think he's amongst the top 89 ATG in history but he isn't far behind.

Could I name 15 FW boxers I'd be comfortable favouring over him? I think I'd struggle tbh.

In summary I'll say this, he's very fan friendly and very very good. Maybe even great, just not all time great.

    Both

He had just had back to back all time great wars with Bazooka Limon and Cornelius Boza Edwards.

The Mancini fight was a great payday which he certainly earned with his recent thrillers.

He should have quit after the Mancini fight, but took punishment for another four years. Weirdly, he still had enough left to beat Art Frias and Rafael Solis. But, big picture, he didn't need to take any more punishment, certainly after the Mancini fight.
