Thousands gather for Valuev vigil

    Thousands of people took part in a candlelit vigil through St Petersburg to remember the career of Sugar Nikolai Valuev (pbuh).

         Mourners carried Russian flags and candles in a procession from Saint Isaacs Cathedral to Palace Square.
    The crowds gathered in the square to sing Russian songs for the boxer whose career may be over due to damage to his right hand and left shoulder.
    Palace Square was closed to traffic and roads in the area were heavily congested.
    The event was organised by Russian radio station Radio SNV.
    It was estimated up to 10,000 people joined the vigil, which was a listener's idea.


    He said: "We had 60 hours to organise it and we estimated there would be between 50 and 100 people.
    "There are many Russians here who loved Nikolai but there are also a lot of British people because we broadcast in both languages."
    Anya Rozova, 24, from Moscow, said: "We want to be together to give honour to our Russian champion, to feel a certain solidarity with other people here.
    "When I heard Niko was considering retirement I felt very upset.
    "We knew boxing was dying but I think Russians and maybe everyone all over the world was waiting for some kind of miracle from our sweet Prince."

    I never thought anyone would come close to Ray Robinson. But this dude dit it.

    I'm going to get a life-size tattoo of the legend on myself.

    I'm only 6 feet tall, but accomplishing the impossible is what SNV did best, so to honor him it's my duty to at least try and do the same. Wish me luck.

    Its a shame SNV came at such a bad era. I woud love to have seen him fight and beat Ali and the rest of the 70s kids.

    Tragic news. Valuev may leave us but the techniques and revolutionary new punches he invented will change boxing forever. History won't forget that while mere mortals were still trying to throw 1-2s, SNV just let his opponents have all three at once...
