Great moment on part 2, 2:37, Sharkey lands a right that swivels Dempsey's head, Dempsey roars back and drives Sharkey across the ring. As time goes by I'm more and more sold on Dempsey's greatness, even though I regret his inactivities and that he never met Wills (who'd have been a deserving challenger if he were half as deserving as he was).
Very Very controversial. Arguably should have been a DQ win for Sharkey. Sharkey really gave Dempsey a boxing lesson. Frustrated the hell out of Jack. Jack did take a good punch in this fight.
Although I think Sharkey did some very deft boxing, what I'm seeing doesn't come to a boxing lesson, IMO. Dempsey is getting to Sharkey's body in every round; and shot reactions or no, Dempsey's still able to duck, slip and block a fair number of punches. So I think it looks like a very competitive fight, waged by each man with fervor, in which the question hangs in the air whether Dempsey's body work is going to catch up with Sharkey. So I just can't see where this can be considered an interupted schooling -- or, rather (and better), both fighters are schooling each other in their own particular brand of fighting.
You can put it that way...but bottom line is who was ahead in the fight? I have sharkey up 5 rounds to 1. That's a big margin. Dempsey was getting in a few body blows, but sharkey was controlling the whole fight with his sharp flush counters. Sharkey was outboxing dempsey, and pretty easily. I don't think jack was schooling sharkey at all. Shark was on his way to a wide unanimous decision win.
This is a much closer contest than is often reported... Was Sharkey trying to win on a foul here? Interesting that Dempsey's punches are much tighter than many posters would have you believe.
So what rounds did you score for Dempsey? I thought Shark was well in command. It wasn't shark who hit himself in the balls with a wicked combination. It was Dempsey.
Sharkey was trying to win on a foul and I dont think he made the right effort to get up. I dont know, he went down from the head shot but he grabbed his balls when the ref started counting. Having said that, he was almost certainly fouled with a low blow. He wasn't exactly a clean fighter in this fight himself though, and I think Sharkey's famous EMOTIONS cost him this fight more than anything else. He got a bad break and he lost his cool, starting crying about it instead of focussing.
The ending, for Ted Spoons liking, is a characteristic Sharkey meltdown. Sharkey got hit low, complained, but when he got hit in the jaw he welled-up inside and sold the complaint (had it of been truly bad Sharkey would been dropped as every other boxer does who is really nailed in the jewels). The notable thing about the fight is Dempsey's toughness. Sharkey in '27 was red hot; well-trained and focused (by his standards anyway). The same blows would knockout Tommy Loughran and deck Primo Carnera.
Even Ray Arcel sold Jack short in this department, saying that it was fortunate his first match with Tunney was only scheduled for ten, saying Dempsey couldn't have stood up for 15 rounds. Arcel was wrong. Jack would have kept going until the final bell unless the decision to stop was made for him, just as it was for Frazier against Foreman and Ali, and Muhammad himself against Holmes.
