Ali collapsed due to relief, more than anything. He was ready for the fifteenth,as exhausted as he was.
Interesting bit about the police chiefs...I had heard things about Frazier's befriending of wealthy higher-up CEO's who were helping his management, which contributed to Ali calling him an uncle tom, but do you have any more information on that other bit?
Frazier befriended a notoriously racist police chief called Frank Rizzo. Rizzo was responsible for some horrendous attacks on black people with dogs and all sorts of other disgusting, vicious acts. Let's just say Joe did himself no favours in the eyes of his community in VERY 'uneasy' times to say the least. I'm not saying it was right for Ali to call him an Uncle Tom though, but people don't understand the times. I'm surprised in a way that so many have fallen for this type of guttersnipe film making. But then again i'm not, because i know the people it's aimed at and the intentions behind it. It's very effective. I've just been around long enough, know too much about boxing, too much about Ali and to much about history to be fooled by a couple of posh British boys who know NOTHING about a complex topic, who read a book and ran with it.
the first i heard about this was in the doco mentioned and because its purely a 1 sided account of things it's hard for me to know. But ali's autobiographer said that ali had told him that he told his corner to cut of his gloves he was quittin they obviously tried to talk him out of it. on the other side joe cant see out of 1 eye and has coped a beating the last cpl of rounds his corner is telling him they thrwon in the towel and u can see him arguing with them saying he wants the last round. he was furious then and after the fight. if thats true its funny how things can happen and change ur whole life.
i know wat ur saying but every doco about them is always pro ali. and as time goes on his legend grows and grows and ppl only remember the good. which is nice i suppose but unfair on joe. im happy i seen this doc cause its joes account with no ali polish.
So Ali brandishing a gun ( did he shoot it? ) and pointing it toward Frazier's hotel room was fair play? Or how about his mocking of Frazier and keeping that rubber gorilla in his pocket? Frazier befriend ruthless police chiefs? Who? Even if he did, this does not compare with Ali's infatuation and association with the Black Muslim hate group. If there was a score card with the media on Ali vs Frazier, Ali was almost always cast in the role of the righteous man, while Frazier relegated to the lowly role of Uncle Tom. For once a story was told from Frazier's perspective.
Couldn't have said it any better :goodA hell of a lot of stuff was simply ignored where Ali was concerned and it was all to do with his popularity. Most of those NOI fukkers were nothing more than racist pricks which is quite ironic p.s blacks used to try to get into Hagler's ear about the Petronellis (those white folk will steal your money blah blah). He told them to fukk right off :good
After several decades of hearing from many types of pro-Ali media hype, building up Ali to be some kind of flawless saint, brushing his flaws under the carpet, we finally get a documentary telling Smokin' Joe's view of events. About bloody time I say. I've seen the documentary, any bias shown toward Joe during it goes nowwhere near to redressing the balance of the level of bias and sycophancy Ali has benefitted from from the media and his fans since the early 70s. The truth is, the vast majority of the media has hugged Ali's nuts since then, until recently, it seemed to be a taboo subject for anyone to say a bad word about Ali. "Thrilla in Manila" goes a tiny way toward re-dressing the balance, I suggest.
Stevie - first, let me say I respect you as a poster mate. I must say that I feel that the term "canonisation" of Joe in this documentary is strong terminology! Of the two, If either has been canonised over the years it has been Ali, certainly not Frazier. Other side of the same coin? Well, it's a different viewpoint, one that has not been given enough media exposure over the years. For the balance to be properly re-dressed in Frazier's favour, I believe his virtues would need to be exagerated & his flaws brushed under the carpet by the media for the next 35 years, such has been the pro-Ali media hype over the last 3 to 3.5 decades. In summary, I just feel that Smokin' Joe has not been given a fair shake by the media over the years, whereas I feel Ali has been given too much of a pass during the same period.
