Can any of you history buffs think of instances where a fighter took a really good shot to the throat? Surprising that it doesn't happen more often.
There aren't any rules against it but it is very hard to actually do against a boxer as you're taught to keep your chin down and the sides of your arms will block the side of your neck.
Lou Nova famously finished off Max Baer with a throat punch. Can't remember which of their fights though. My eyes still water at the thought of Norton's bomb to Bobick's adam's apple.
Marciano-Charles I -June 1954 -In their classic 15 round brawl,Rocky hit Charles with a crunching right to the throat in the 8th round..it reduced his voice to a whisper for days...
I remember Tyson's cornerman Richie Giachetti asking him in between rounds to jab for the throat - "I want you to jab for the throat in this round, jab for the throat!" - think it was the Holy bite fight - it was suggested that it was a tactical implication - something along the lines of the more you aim for the throat the more you'll actually hit the point of the chin with your jabs
Not a Punch, but i remember Bunny sterling challenging Jean Claude Bouttier for the European middleweight title in 71, on Jean's home turf, Bunny was doing well but tiring, ( his later post 10 rounds stamina often let him down) well Bunny and Jean-Claude fell to the Cavnas with Jean-Claude on top of Bunny, his body weight was on his Knee..which was buried in Bunny's throat , after that Bunny didnt need a Second wind...he needed a second Wind-Pipe ! - suffice it to say Bunny was stopped soon after...but when Throat impacts are mentioned i can help but think of Bunny, his neck and the Knee of Jean Claude..
Marciano-Charles, the first fight I think. Apparently Charles's throat swelled up something awful after the fight and he could barely talk.
