I don't think Ward is an outright dirty fighter. I just think his need to tie up sometimes ends up badly for the opposing fighter who's expecting to still be fighting on the outside, and not pushing Ward away. His elbows are usually when he misses his hooks, he just has a bony arm and it looks like its intentional.
Holyfield fought the exact same way with the incoming head.

Ladies this is a combat sport and sometimes it gets dirty., but of course there are rules, the rules existed before SOG and will continue after him. therefore there were rule violations before him and after him.
