Ward is/has been a roughhouse fighter his entire pro career. Even his pro debut was a foul fest.

Where he excels is how he positions himself to disguise his tactics from the referee. He's what I call an intelligent brawler in the ring. One of his often used tactics is the elbow. He not only throws it but he also leans on fighters with his elbows in clinches and moves it only fractionally around the brow, bridge and eyes.

Ward knows the game. He knows blatant fouls won't always work. He's a bit like Roberto Duran. He's an artistic dirty fighter. The only way that type of fighting will ever be truly dealt with is if Boxing, like Baseball and Football incorporates video into their sport.

 

What about Ward constantly diving in headfirst? Or his lethal knee strike?

Just like Porter, it's part of his style. They're not intentional butts but they do cause a lot of fouls, so you could say he's reckless but not dirty. Dirty is committing repeated blatant fouls. I haven't seen them.

There's also nothing fake about Ward, he's pretty consistent and more professional than most fighters.

Calzaghe definitely would not have beaten him. Much less "schooled" him, Ward has shown the much greater ring IQ over his career.

And yeah, Calzaghe would have beaten the hell out of the guy. No one has shown a "much greater" ring IQ than Joe. Joe figured absolutely everyone he fought out. Prime Hopkins, prime Kessler, and he never needed to cheat to do it

This time Andre's bought the ref, the judges and all else. But there's a reason many still think he's still getting knocked out. He's no Calzaghe

 

You can't call me biased for favoring a skilled fighter in a hypothetical. You can't prove that I'm off base because they never fought. I never said the fight wouldn't be competitive, but Calzaghe isn't "schooling" Ward. I tend to think Calzaghe is overrated but that's just an opinion, an assessment, not a bias, I have nothing personal against him. I think Ward beats him in a competitive fight on cleaner punching.

What I've seen in the video (I didn't watch all of it because I have better things to do with my time) are things that I've seen many other fighters do. The Kessler headbutts were pretty bad, but I blame the ref. If Ward is used to bulling forward with his head on the inside like Porter and Holyfield and a referee doesn't call him out, then it means the culture of norms in the sport tolerates it.

No, slappy Calzaghe who got dropped by and scraped by old Hopkins is not beating the hell out of a prime Ward. Calzaghe is easier to hit than Ward is, and Ward sets up his punches smarter and more accurately. (In my opinion of course.)

What is old Hopkins? Hopkins went on to dominate for ten years after his first KO loss - sorry 5 minute time out - at the hands of "slappy" Joe
