Have thrown or not given their best effort for a larger payday down the road?

I honestly think Sugar Ray Robinson might of done this. Winning the title as many times as he did and then demolishing some of those fighters in rematches...

    Eh.

I've also heard some people speculate Ali could of won Spinks I, but wanted to become a three heavyweight champion. Who knows, might be bull****.

    McCoy?

Listen - i've read in a couple of places, most notabley in Otty's book on Burley, that Robinson threw the Maxim fight. My reaction? Hell no.

    BUT

The story doesn't end there. The story goes that a lot of very important men lost a lot of money gambling on this fight and that Harlem turned against the great Sugar because of this.

There is a little circumstantial evidence to support this.

Next, Robinson comes back - and dumps a couple of fights (Jones and later Fullmer) to please these notables...

Bull**** probably, but there it is.

Lloyd Marshall undoubtedly dumped, so did Shorty Houge. Distressingly it is said that Barbados Joe Walcott was forced to dump.

I don't know why i'm saying "dump" all the time, but there it is.

Robinson is beleived to have carried some fighters ,but he never went in the tank,in fact its said that he went on his European tour toput some distance between himself and the mob ,after he refused to take a dive.Wille Pep has the stigma of a couple of fights that possibly weren't kosher,Benny Leonard is assumed to have deliberatedly fouled Jack Britton while he was down,,this incident formed the basis for Hemingways"Fifty Grand",George Godfrey Chuck Wiggins,Big Boy Peterson,Joe Gans,Corbett and McCoy had an aroma to it ,its easy to speculate hard to prove.

Robinson did indeed tell Blinkey Palermo to do one.

However he did agree to carry some fighters for Blinkey as McVey has said. There's a story about Robinson losing his temper scoring a KO in a fight that was meant to go to points - but I can't remember which fight, if I remember my source I will track it down.

Yeah, I've heard of Joe "quitting" on his stool for no reason in fights he was winning.

He didn't have the luxery of being as famous as Jack Johnson... I really don't doubt he would of been killed if he'd fought it too much.

Abe Attell and Kid McCoy spent virtually their entire careers throwing fights.

Langford, Jeanette, McVey and Wills all gave less than their best on many an occasion. Maxie Rosenbloom was another big name who's career was far from being on the level.

Sonny liston in the ali fight maybe both, though im not to sure about the first one, dont want to start anything, but with his obvious mafia connections(not unusual in boxing though) and the phantom punch that still even today no one can say for sure if it had the power to put a man his size down, dont look to good does it?

Jack johnson vs willard,he says he did, using the hands covering his eyes as proof, willard says he wishes he had done it eariler if he was going to throw it,the obvious reason here would be maybe that would be to obvious, who knows for sure

I'm legitimately curious if he could get anything out of that considering the circumstances of it happening.

LaMotta said he lost to Billy Fox so he could get the MW title shot against Cerdan.

Don,t you think you can make more money with the title than without it?
Clay/Ali was an 8 to 1 bet against Liston ,the wire services reported no late surge of money on him,so no big gamble clean ups took place, what other motive can you suggest for going in the tank ,? The Mob certainly knew they would not get the reigns if Ali won the title.Liston quit because he was being punished and humiliated,he had very few rounds of boxing under his belt ,two blowouts of Patterson meant that he had 2 rounds of actual competition in 2 years ,he wasnt in shape for a long fight ,came in thinking he would blow Ali away ,and quit cold ,rather than take a beating. After this fight no one wanted to stage the return ,thats why it ended up in Lewiston ,Liston made zero out of throwing the fight except his purse ,which was held until Dr Nardiello confirmed his shoulder injury, and after the two fights he was persona non grata in the States so the Mob lost their meal ticket, again I say what was his motive for throwing the fight, other than to escape a hiding?I dont think you have thought this through.
