Can't help but be root for this guy. Thurman is going to be, or should I say wants to be a real People's champion. That's admirable and it's refreshing to see a young fighter in this day and age profess that dream. Thurman is skilled, he is just unorthodox. His punches are very accurate, he seemingly has great stamina, good power, good ring generalship, and he doesn't flinch from getting hit. A lot of people are making mountains out of mole hills with regards to his defense. He got caught by probably 4 flush overhand rights that he rolled and took with ease. Every other punch landed was a glancing shot. This kid will go on to have a great career IMO. He's got the talent and the hunger, plus a really good trainer in Dan Birmingham. The sky is the limit for Thurman.
agree with this. people always go overboard on early mistakes by fighters. People were saying ward was all hype with no chin cos he nearly got took out by a journey man. David Haye wasn't supposed to win anything after getting ko'd early in his career. He looks great to me, and i love his attitude.
It really is funny to see the hate. He was walking Zaveck into huge shots all night long, and never deterred from the game plan. At a point when other fighters would lose focus because Zaveck kept coming, he didn't fold. Not everyone is going to have a chin like Zaveck. I think a lot of people that are hating are ones that are firmly latched onto Broner's jock. Thurman doesn't act hood and stupid to appear "cool". He keeps it real and doesn't put on a front. **** the act bull****.
I don't buy the whole Zaveck is shot either. Why and since when. He looked good against Berto, he just got some bad cuts. He was still highly ranked. He looked good this weekend. I don't get why people say he's shot. I'm fine with Broner at the minute. Because he is fighting the best, and fights that aren't getting made are because the other people don't want it. Lets see if he keeps it up
His technique/tactics are (still) obviously very flawed as he rushes in and leaves himself wide open often. It's nice what he's saying, but a Roberto Duran doesn't get made.
+1 It's good that he's not afraid to let go of his 0 because he's pretty unpolished. Good 12 rounds he's got in the bag vs Zaveck though.
The only other fighter in the game today with this mentality is abner mares, a fighter who wants the big fights and is not worried about losing his 0. The problem arises when the promoters would much rather go the easy route which happened with abner, and abner made it clear he wanted the biggest and best fights which is why he never ducked the likes of anselmo moreno who the majority thought would school him. When this type of situation arises for thurman he's got to make the point clear that he wants the best.
Boxing fans are worse than teenage girls sometimes. Only the idiots really believe what Thurman is saying. he's already been carefully brought up in the ranks, and he will continue to be. Every young fighter says they want to fight EVERYBODY. That's just the vigor of youth talking. Many neither have the talent, nor the luck to get all the fights they want. Let's just wait and see. Show and prove.
His position is commendable, to be sure. But will his promoter let him decide who he fights? His next victory will be followed by a post-fight interview containing the obligatory "I'll fight whoever my promoter puts in front of me..." statement. Guaranteed.
