Yeah Tiberi won. He won a close fight against a Toney on the flu who had cramps in his leg so that he wasn't even able to walk by the end of the fight. Toney should never have stepped into the ring that evening, the state that he was in, but being the old-school fighter he is he did, and Tiberi won and got robbed. If you think that makes Tiberi a better fighter than a peak Toney then you're delusional. This is not a lazy and out of shape Toney like the one that fought Thadzi, this is a sick Toney who was maybe 50% that evening and who went on to have 5 great performances during the year after this fight happened. Anyways, Toney has been robbed a few times himself (Peter I, Griffin 2x) so I guess that makes up for it.
I'm sure Dave Tiberi doesn't think that Toney getting robbed makes up for it. I'm not saying that Tiberi was better than Toney in his prime but Tiberi worked his butt off for that title shot, and was the better man in the ring that day. He deserved to have that victory and the recognition that went along with being the middleweight champ. Maybe Toney would have comeback and beaten him in a rematch, but Tiberi won that day fair and square and that's what this thread is refering to. Not their talent levels or their career achievements.
Toney was in the best years of his career based on his peak performances around this time, though obviously not at his best for this particular fight. He was in terrible shape.
It was one of the worst decisions I can think of in recent years, including the DLH Sturm and the Holyfield Lewis draw.
I remember watching this fight when I was a little ****, I think it might have been on NBC? Anyway, I scored a close but clear loss for Toney.
CLOSE? Are you KIDDING? This is the only fight to have ever been investigated by Congress. It was THAT bad! Here are some links for people who don't know the whole story: http://www.doghouseboxing.com/Newman/Newman021704.htm http://www.boxrec.com/media/index.php?title=Fight:5864
When did I say he shouldn't be considered peak? In fact, I EXPLICITLY said he was at his physical peak. What's your problem?
I was at that fight, and imho the 'robbery' thing is a myth. The fight was there for Sturm if he wanted to take it, but he didn't. He jabbed, jabbed, jabbed and never stepped on the gas. DLH shoeshined and did a lot of showy, ineffectual stuff but it was still scoring points. He did more, imho, than Sturm. Bottom line is Sturm just couldn't kick it into another gear. ODLH couldn't hurt him but Sturm just plain didn't do enough and let Oscar steal it.
O.k I go boxing history -the Tiberi Bill is still sitting in Congress maybe Obama will sign-it comes up every year.
