Flowers was a master boxer with fast hands and a good punch but often slapped his way to a points win Joe Calzaghe style. Presumably he must have had problems with his hands. He was a switch hitter who changed from orthodox to southpaw to frustrate his oponents. His main weakness was his chin which could be cracked by solid bangers. It is interesting to note that prety much all his noteworthy career losses were by knockkout. It seems that nobody could beat him on the cards.
Supposedly the first Greb fight was a out and out robbery with the crowd rioting. Supposedly the decision would of been reversed if it wasn't for racial tensions stemming from it.
I'm not sure it was so much of a robbery, Russell, as it being more of a case of some saying that Greb shouldn't have lost his title on a decision in a fight that was that close. I've read a few opinions from the New York papers in the day-afters, and from what I've read, they seem to be split right down the middle as to who won; New York Herald-Tribune had it for Greb 8-6-1, as did the New York Daily News at 6-5-4 (Hype Igoe was at ringside and also had it for Greb 7-5-3). The New York Times had it for Flowers, as did the New York Sun which had it 7-5-3 for Flowers. Sounds like a close fight that could have gone either way in the scoring from what I've read from those reporting on it.
BIG DEE HERE= Both of the Greb vs Flowers fights were screw jobs to Greb as Greb handled Flowers easily in the first fight and then in the 2nd and 3rd fights he got screwed badly. Tiger Flowers vs Mickey Walker was a screw job for Flowers as he handled Walker easily in Chicago but was screwed by the mob in the dec. as Capone didn`t want flowers to hold on to the title. Capone probabilly had money bet on the fight. Flowers should have fought Walker in New York instead of Chicago as he would have won hands down.
BIG DEE HERE= They fought 3 times and the 1st fight Greb mopped the ring with Flowers`s ass. Harry Greb had the utmost respect for Tiger flowers. Something happened in the first fight that shocked Greb in that he spoke differently when fighting Tiger Flowers after that first fight. Greb was fighting a typical Greb fight with the typical Greb foul language. You know Mother ****er this and that but it was when he called Flowers a God Damn mother-****er Tiger Flowers responded to the language. Harry was to say later that Flowers didn`t care about being called a mother-****er or anything else but when I said God -damn he took exception to it and said Harry please don`t use the lords name in vain. HELL I THOUGHT HE WAS KIDDING BUT I`LL BE DAMN IF HE DIDN`T MEAN IT AND I CLEANED UP WHAT I SAID WHEN I FOUGHT HIM AFTER THAT.
