on contrary to what goooner suggests, I keep my hands tight an close to my head and chin down while lowering my elbows as low as possible to cover my body....if I ever get hit with anything, its nothing that I cant take because of the guard. I do alot of pullups and chin-ups which allow me to have bigger built forearms, that way i can maintain my hands tensed for a longer time periods. Add footwork to your defense, counter, of whatever it is that you need to do. If you have quick hands it helps to explode fast after your opponent stopped throwing or anytime you see an opening. Check out how Eddie Chambers fights, its really is a perfect example of how to mix it up with this type of defense
I dont object to having your hands close to your head, nothing wrong with putting the ear muffs on, but what i dont! like to see is when people lean their head into the gloves thus putting too much weight on their lead foot. Chambers is the perfect example of where to hold your gloves imo, for that particular style.
This style can work if you have fast hands, good countering ability, and quick feet. I also think you need the right build. That is long arms, and a shorter than average torso. The drawback to this style is shifting gears to offense, and not throwing enough punches to win close rounds.
depends on your style,, if you have a loose relaxed stlye i wudnt reccomend it as itt takes away from the advantages you have
