"Very Good" or "Good" I'm not going to fall out with you over that. My point was just that he's not a great fighter (in the proper sense of the word) and the Margo fight didn't alter that. IMHO the handwraps didn't play a part in the loss, so we'll have to agree to disagree and I'm not sure what this "blind man" has missed but to me I don't see any decline in Cotto that couldn't be explained by age, weight and natural wear and tear.
I'm not sure quite how I feel about it- my stance is now pretty ambiguous compared to before. Margo went from being one of my faves to someone I really hated (I know it's a strong word, but that's genuinely how I felt when the wraps were found) overnight. We'll never know if he cheated against Cotto, but the illegal wraps that were found before the Mosley fight apparently weren't new. However, we have also seen Pacquiao swell Cotto's face up, so the damage Cotto sustained in the Margo fight was possibly caused by completely legal wraps and gloves. We'll just never know and any amount of speculation will never find an answer. Anyway, after over a year of not seeing him, I'll admit that I do miss him and, given we don't know if he has ever been in the ring with loaded wraps, perhaps he should be given the benefit of the doubt; although I do highly doubt that he didn't know what was being put in his wraps as he had suggested before. If Margo performs well at 154, I suppose he'll go some way towards vindicating himself of any wrongdoing before. I feel slightly bad for it, but I will be watching the torrent of the fight. I want Margo to do well just to prove he was never a cheat, TBH.
I was a big Margorito fan back around the Cotto fight, I picked him to win it and stayed up to watch it, celebrated when he won it. After the 'handwrapping situation', I was orignally sympathetic, then thought. 'No' the guy had intent to cheat, but in Boxing cheating can seriously damage an opponents health, its not like running or football. It then adds a question mark to his previous victories and rightly so. The guy should never be allowed to fight again. Banned for life.
Regarding the Cotto fight, I was told the Nevada Athletic commission issue your equipment pre-fight, and it comes sealed in bags, thus cannot be tampered with. Can anyone confirm if that is true? Also I've always been pretty sceptical as to what advantage he could get from what he did. Personally I feel it would be minimal at best, and it's something that has never really been proven. If he was gaining a major advantage I'd like to think he would of been banned for life.
I'm looking forward to him coming back. I hope he spanks all Welterweights before him and then gets beat by Floyd :good
I was never convinced by Margarito's claims that he was unaware of what was occuring regarding the illegal hand-wraps. If you're the fighter, you employ the trainer and everyone around you, its your body, your equipment, your career... the buck stops with Antonio Margarito. Yes the trainer should be banned as should the WBA representative for not doing his job. At worst, and what I believe, is Antonio consciously was going to go into a fight with the intention of using illegal wraps to apply harder punches and hurt his opponent more than he would legally. What if Nazeem Richardson hadnt spotted it and Shane Mosely was severly hurt or killed? Dramatic? Sure, but a genuine possibilty if he werent caught and for that he deserved to be kicked out for life. Thats the worst sure, the best is he didnt know what his own staff were doing, not having total control of his career and risking his own career and others health coz of stupidity. Simple as. I dont feel, on the other hand, that it is right to disregard his achievements prior to the Mosely fight. People have mentioned that he is innoccent until proven guilty. Well he is guilty its just the level of crime that is questioned. He hasnt been proved to have used illegal wraps in previous fights and should be judged accordingly when discussing those fights. At the end of the day Margarito's toughness, naturally huge size at 147, relentless come forward style and of course insane tough whiskers made him a force, not even a massive banger to add question to the hand-wrap sage. He wasnt loading his chin up with PoP! As you may be able to Margarito but am utterly appalled by whats occured and by letting him fight again sets a bad example. Officials didnt spot it before, other fighters might just try thier luck and get away with it
Am I the only one who thinks that a lifetime ban would have been the best thing for Margarito? I think he's too long in the tooth to change his style and I seriously worry for him after the punishment he took from Cintron, Cotto and Mosley. I reckon he's well on the way to long-term damage as it is. And if Arum is serious about putting Margarito in with Pacquiao I honestly think that we could see a ring tragedy on our hands.
Absolutely mate, his chin in his last 3 fights has taken the equivalent of being hit by a tram. Sooner or later that's gonna catch up with you, hopefully for his sake the extended lay off has given him the rest needed to avoid anything bad happening. But his style will never change thats for sure.
I think it's quite clear the guy has been cheating a long time... I hope he gets his face smashed in...and retires
There's a picture if i remember that circulated around the GF of Margo after fight in ring with gloves off against Cotto and people were saying it looked he loaded gloves that fight as well. Sad we never find out truth.
